The peak time of temple visit - do not attempt if you are not a fan of crowds. Tomorrow will see prasadan being prepared on temporary stoves made of stone all along the roads leading to the temple. The holy fire from the temple is passed on to each stove which starts the cooking process.

We had a opportunity to stay at dormitory facilities at the adjacent place associated with temple trust. It was good, spacious, affordable cost. Well maintained neat and clean. Members are friendly and helpful. Good or pilgrimage stay and families with large group. Temple is just near, and have a good vibe . Must visit place if you are interested to have visit temples in your tour plan

Attukal Bhagavathy Temple - Sabarimala of the Women!

Divine mother is so powerful, her devotee's wish never got into vain.

Temple structure is a mix of tradition and modern outlook. (both Kerala and Tamil styles of architecture). You can more beautifully carved figures in and around temple in both original stone form and colored ones.

The temple will be open from 5AM to 12.30PM and 5PM to 8.30PM (expect pongala festival days). Choroonu - first rice feeding ceremony for children Thulabharam, Vidyarambham, Archana etc. can be done at this temple.

Festival time : Kuthiyottam Nercha (for Boys below the age of 13 years. These young boys represent the wounded soldiers of the Goddess Mahishasura Marddini) and Thalappoli for girls!

Nexy year's PONGALA is on March05, 2015[Festival starts from Feb25 - Mar6]

Best time to visit... Wednesdays ( less crowd )

Famous for the Attukal Pongala held around February every year, this Devi temple is situated in the heart of Trivandrum city and close to the East Fort Area where the Padmanabha Swamy temple is located. Ample parking space, very clean and well maintained. If you want to avoid the crowds and have a good darshan, then its is better to avoid weekend mornings and evenings and festival days. The architecture is similar to temples of Tamil Nadu with colourful murals of Gods and Goddesses. The sanctum sanctorum however is typical Kerala style.

This temple has huge religious significance and is the focal point of an event which has a guinness record as well. The "attukal Pongala" during which women from all over gather to worship the goddess by cooking sweet porridge( called "payasam") . The entire city will be taken over for this event during this time and the blessing from the temple is usually done by priests on Helicopters

Come March and the temple celebrates the Pongal festival. This festival is exclusively for women. The God is offered sweet porridge known as Payasam in local language. The congregation happens to be mentioned in the Guinness Book, if I am not mistaken

You should visit this festival in lifetime about "Attukal Pongala " which happens in Feb & Marck of the year. 3 million women and achieved guiness book of records prays at the same time for this festival.
The festival is about offering of a sweet dish called “ Pongala” which literally means “to boil over” , porridge made of rice , sweet brown molasses, coconut , jagerry, nuts , raisins.etc. This is offered to the deity residing in one of the most religious ancient temple , Attukal Devi (Attukal Bhagavathy) - small temple situated two kilometeres away from Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple .Sine they cook the Pongala in lakhs, the fire is what fills the smoke. So if you are someone who cant they smoke , then avoid going .

You would have lifetime experience as this festival many international tourist come to enjoy.

Tip: Carry water, camera, something heavy to eat as you are walking around for atleast 4 hours.Carry mouth scarf and hat.
