Good experience, should visit once, check for online tickets before going otherwise need to stand in queue for long hours for a lot of 30 tickets only from the counter. We didn't see any elephants, saw some birds etc. Preferably go morning times.

Lonely Planet and Rough Guide are far too pessimistic. We saw two lots of elephants, as well as a good selection of birds and mammals.

1 and half hour of boat safari in the Periyar lake is a great experience. It is as big as a river and many wild animals are found in the bank with a great view of the water body and the jungle. Every moment in the boat during this safari will melt you in the nature.

We visited Thekkady as part of our Kerala tour. There was excessive rush out there to reach the Tiger Sanctuary from where the lake is accessible. The 1.5 km walk is worth it. You could see many varieties of birds and monkeys enjoying there...special mention of giant wild squirrel ( if not wrong!). Monkeys are the king and have no... More

We were on the 9,30 Boat ride. Please book your tickets well in advance as there was a mad rush for the same and miss a particular time slot. We had booked the tickets online. A very special mention to all the staff from the forest department, who man this site. Well organized. Once we boarded we had to put... More

Getting up at 6 am for a so-so overcrowded boat ride just didn't do it for me. We had already been to Rathambhore and Nagarhole so this felt like "an add on just for something to do." would have rather slept in. But that's me!

Long ques for tickets...Right now less water in the lake...need to first take tickets for entry into the National Park, then go to the park...walk 300 to 400 meters to reach boating ticket counter... Online tickets are already sold...No elephant seen... Saw some deers and wild boar...take binoculars to see them....best bet is to go early morning..

We did a boat trip on this lake. There are 3 large boats full of people, It is beautiful and peaceful aside from the noise from the boat. We didn't see many animals and I imagine they hide away from the boats. I would recommend the trip and a guide did advise that the best time to travel to see... More

There is nothing much to write home about. The Lake has to be reached through a mini forest area with Teak and other plantations where one can see many violent monkeys. The walk is for around 2 KMs. The Lake was closed for boating as there was no sufficient water. This is the Lake where boat tragedy had occurred some... More
