We had visited this temple previously in 2012 but I found it so peaceful and enchanting that I wanted to return again.
As before we timed it so that we could be there when the birds were called and fed, an amazing experience and nice to be able to take part in.
The temple is beautiful, the carvings are wonderful and the inlay work on the floor is amazing. The temple building is very nice as well and very cool inside. It has a very simplistic beauty of white marble about it which makes it all the more appealing.
When we went in this time a Jainist(?) approached us and explained about the temple and the statues and Gods as we went around. This was really appreciated and we learnt more on this visit than our previous, so again I was really glad we came back.
You have to remove shows and leave bags etc with the attendants outside and it is quite safe there.
Please though remember this is a place of worship and therefore please be respectful of the temple and of the faith. Some tourists were repeatedly asked not to take photo's inside only to carry on when back was turned and you could see the disrespect hitting the worshippers who were still trying to remain polite in spite of this.
A very worthwhile place to visit, if you can time around the bird feeding then so much the better but if not I'd still highly recommend the temple in its own right.

Although we were pressed for time to catch a flight, we stayed to witness the pigeons feeding. Little did my wife and I know that Prafulbhai would invite us to be the main hosts to feed the pigeons. Jiv Daya (animal welfare) is a cornerstone of the Jain faith and for many years Prafulbhai used to feed the pigeons in the afternoon. Once a monk arrived and by way of narrating a story, indirectly conveyed to Prafulbhai that even animals need to have a schedule to follow and therefore decided to change the time to feed the pigeons to between 12-12.30pm. How could he convey to the pigeons that he would be changing the time he would feed them? The monk advised him that when your intentions are pure, the animals would understand your spoken language. Around noon daily, Prafulbhai or other members of the temple strike on a steel plate shouting "Chalo" (come on). The pigeons circumbulate the temple dome thrice. Then the Jain Mangalik (holy prayer) is recited and the pigeons start feeding. Humans are losing faith in spirituality, yet what a sight to witness that these pigeons have an inherent sense of reveration to the Jain idols in the temple and only after paying their respect and listening to the prayers do they feed.

Easy to miss the entrance, this temple, is worth a visit for its layout and architecture, and for getting to know something about the Jains. . No footwear, and no photography allowed inside. must be aware of the times to visit the temple - it opens at 11am to the non Jains. Visitors are not allowed to certain parts of the temple.

Include this stop in your list of temple and church visits. The sign in front is a little off putting to non Jain followers but the attendants are such lovely people. It is such a peaceful religion- they feed the pigeons because 'others feed the beautiful and more popular birds'. The gentleman feeding the pigeons, took me by the hand and showed me how to get them to land on me to eat- it was a great experience and I will look at pigeons a bit more positive now!

Good shwetamber mandir. Apart from darshan of tirthankara Main attraction of temple was Pigeon feeding. When chanted pigeon did parikrama of temple came for food. It was beautiful experience. Summer you will get butter milk in the temple premises which give relief from hot summer. Management of temple is very helping in nature. On the same street of temple you get a shop for famous kachori and namkeens.

Jain temple is located on the Gujarati Road, Mattancherry, Cochin. It is believed that the Jains migrated from Kuch and Saurashtra of Gujarat. This temple is nearing celebration of the 100th year. It is a very calm and quiet locality and most of the Jain community stay in and around this place. jaina's are vegetarians and keeps non-violence, self-control, and penance as the principles to lead a good jaina life. This temple is open to all communities. As soon as we entered a lady accompanied us and showed us around and explained about the temple and the customs.
God in jainism or Tirthankara is not meant as the ultimate power of universe in jainism. A tirthankara is the one who have made controll over the enemies of his mind from leading the life towards moksha and a person who has conquered his mind like this is termed as 'Jina' among the jains...The place is kept calm and the surroundings of the temple is paved with interlocking floor tiles.. The temple adds value to the historical prominence of the place Mattancherry besides the DUTCH PALACE museum and JEW STREET--The place where the Jew Community lived in Kerala.

Temple is small with a mostly white marble interior. Interesting but remember no photos allowed inside.
Ask how long until the next Pigeon feeding. It makes for a good short video and some fun.

While on a Kerela Trip - you would visit the usual - Fort Kochi, Dutch Palace, Marine Drive, Munnar, Thekdey, Waterfalls, Alleppy back waters etc - I would say your visit would be incomplete if you dont witness the magic at this Jain temple. Located barely 5 mins away from the Dutch palace (which will definitely be on your itinerary) this temple might seem like "just another temple" to visit. The real magic is the way pigeons are fed here. The sequence of activities is as follows - just before 12:15 pm everyday - hundreds of pigeons would comfortably occupy all roofs in and around the temple. Exactly at 12:15 pm the priest would make a large sound banging a spoon against a plate - to which all the pigeons would respond by starting their "parikrama" i.e. flying in circles above the temple. They would keep flying until the head priest would say "Bas" (stop) - the pigeons respond to this command and come down to the feeding area. The head priest will then chant a "Mantra" post which all pigeons will start eating. General people / tourists can then stretch out their hands to feed the birds. The pigeons will comfortably sit on your hand and eat :). Its a good experience and a must visit place to experience this entire episode.
