Its hangout place for locals as well as a touristy place mainly due to the fishing nets. You will be constantly harangued by peddlars and the whole area has an overwhelming smell of fish. There are quite a number of fish stalls there.

Visited last week. Interesting place with lots of history attached behind. If you are willing to spend some time and if you can get hold of a good guide you will learn a lot about this place.

The nets, set up on teak and bamboo poles, were brought by one of the first visitors to the Malabar Coast, the traders from the court of Kublai Khan. An ideal place to watch fishermen use these nets is the Vasco da... More

Vasco da Gama Square shows a different face, a different mood at different times of the day. In the morning, it is serene. A few locals stroll by the seaside and some others can be found playing football and cricket. The most arresting sights however are those of the fishermen dipping the ancient Chinese nets into the sea and drawing... More

I went past what I thought must have been the square since the monument matched up with the map. There was no plaque or anything to explain what it was or how it got there.

The place is important only due to its historical importance. It needs lots of spending on infrastructure development.
