Had a fabulous day trawling through the Jewish heritage of Cochin. Not only did we have a knowledgeable guide, Dominic was passionate about the history & sharing that with us. First stop was Jewtown/Mattancherry where we strolled the streets looking at shops/houses which were once bustling spice shops & which still bore evidence of their Jewish heritage (Hebrew script, Star of David). We also visited the exquisite synagogue. Then a drive to the Muziris area where we visited the gorgeous synagogue at Chennamangalam (small is stunning!) with its exquisitely carved original wooden panel. Then to Paravur synagogue, built Keralan-style. Our guide was engaging, entertaining & his English was good. We also had a terrific driver who was careful & didn't take any risks on the congested roads of Ernakulum. For something completely different in India - highly recommended!

My friend and I spent a half day with Rajesh on a canoe around the backwaters. The drive from Cochin was comfortable and the driver professional. We started with a banana smoothie at a lovely house on the water before heading off in the canoe. Rajesh was very knowledgable about the area - both the environment and the history. He was full of interesting and funny stories. We hopped out of the canoe at various points to see some traditional crafts. The lunch at the end was fantastic - a variety of delicious curries and condiments. The owner of the house was a great host and chatted with us about Kerala/ Indian culture, teaching us a lot. A lovely and relaxing day that I would highly recommend.

The guide was excellent, but the tour isn't exactly as advertised. The visit to the agricultural cooperative was in the final stages of cleaning up after the market day, thus there wasn't much to see. From there, we walked through a neighborhood of this quiet rural community. After a short walk, we visited a farmer of this unique rice, while using his fields to grow prawns in the off-season. The family doesn't speak English, but the guide is very helpful. The walk along the dikes separating the fields can be a major challenge if you require mobility assistance. Getting into and out of the boat isn't easy! (Don't wear 'good clothes' or good shoes; LADIES: DON'T WEAR DRESSES OR SKIRTS!) The boat is not a modern conveyance, so don't expect much. Understanding the farmer isn't hard, but the modernity combined with the modesty of his life helps one to comprehend survival in this environment. The visit to the second house in the backwaters area was interesting because it seems so out of place. Very modern family living the best that they can.

A great tour that ended a two-week trip through Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The tour started and ended promptly, with Rosemary waiting for us when we arrived ahead of the start time. Rosemary gave us thorough explanations of all the points of interest in the tour, and having grown up in the area, was also able to offer personal anecdotes and experiences that helped us understand certain practices with ease. She was even kind enough to introduce us to some of her friends and we had a wonderful time getting to know them - a truly personal note to end our tour on! Highly recommended.
