The area

Address
Neighborhood: Ulsoor
Home to Bangalore’s biggest lake, Ulsoor is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, renowned for its quaint narrow streets lined with stylish home decor stores and boutiques selling handwoven saris and numerous temples like the impressive Halasuru Someshwara Temple, which dates back to the 16th century. Visitors can enjoy the sunset views while boating at the lake, which also has a walking trail along the shore. Connected to the center by the M G Road, Ulsoor remains a sleepy, spread out suburb closely connected with nature and still manages to be hip and buzzing with activity, thanks to a cluster of bakeries, cafes, watering holes and plenty of curio shops in the vicinity.

On 18th June'22, myself along with my son & parents got to visit Sri Someswara temple at Halasuru. It is one of the oldest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

It is constructed in the Vijayanagar style of architecture, the shrine has notable beautiful carvings on the walls and wonderful interiors. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. Other deities available in the temple are Kamakshamma, Arunachaleswara, Bhimeswara, Nanjundeswara and Panchalingeswara.

We had great dharshan & blessings of Lord Shiva and spent a pleasant evening at the temple.

This is a very old temple, probably 1000 years+, with a beautiful architecture. You can see the pillars of the temple carved very beautifully with various mythological characters on it. The main gharbhagudi, housing the deity, is square in shape and very unique. The temple has a huge complex with enough open space. You also have various other deity temples around in this complex.

This is one of the oldest temples of Bangalore city and it is tucked in the bylanes adjoining the busy MG Road. Don't miss visiting this temple and have a look at the beautiful architecture there and take the blessings of Lord Shiva here.

Halasuru (Ulsoor) Metro Station is at walk able distance from this temple.

Very ancient temple - Sri Someshwara Swamy is located in halasuru area. Temple is situated in a narrow and crowdy street. Temple having main deity as Lord Someshwara Swamy - form of Lord Shiva.

Vijayanagara era architectural style is visible in its outer and inner walls.

Very divine and holy atmosphere inside the temple.

‘Soma’ means ‘Moon’ and ‘Eshwara’ is Lord Shiva. Thus He who wears Moon as a decorative object on His head is Someshwara, which is another name of Lord Shiva. There are hundreds of temples dedicated to Lord Someshwara in India. In Bangalore, which is the capital city of international importance we find many temples of Someshwara. One such significant and historical temple is at Ulsoor in Bangalore. Ulsoor is spelled as Halasuru and Alasuru etc. Halasuru Someshwara Temple is one of the oldest temples of Chola age. Vijayanagara kings have made modifications, but major improvements were done by Kempegowda, (1513–1569), the founder of Bangalore.
According to legendary stories Kempegowda was instructed by Someshwara to build a temple using hidden treasure, which he got and build this beautiful temple, that has many elements of Vijayanagara architecture. It is a square sanctum (garbhagriha) surrounded by a narrow passage connecting mantapa (hall). The walls of this hall are decorated with pilasters and sculptures in wall painting. The hall leads to an open mantapa having four large areas connecting four pillars. The eastern gopuram is an imitation of 16th century structure.
Tower or Rajagopura is tall. In its front stone pillar called ‘kambha or Nandi’ stands at the entrance gate. There are number of sculptured images of gods and goddesses selected from mythology on the tower. I could count 48 pillars with beautiful carvings of religious painting.
We find Navagraha stand (stand where nine planet- gods are installed) on north where 12 pillars symbolic of Sages are located. Two Dwarapalakas standing at the entrance look like cautioning you to be disciplined inside. Curiously interesting mythological episode is the sculpture of Ten-headed Ravana attempting to lift Kailasa Mountain. The figures of Goddess Durga slaying demon Mahishasura and images of Tamil Saints known as Nayanar sages, delineation of Girija Kalyana, being the popular episode of Lord Shiva’s wedding with Parvati, Seven legendary sages called ‘Saptarishis’ would attract the attention of the viewers. The sacred Kalyani (stone stepped water tank) in the temple precinct is said to be of 1200 years ancient.
In the wedding sequence Lord Brahma is the priest, Lord Vishnu, 7 Rishis, 12 Adityas and 11 Rudras are VVVIPs apart from King of Himalaya and his wife Menadevi performing kanyadana (giving bride in marriage ceremony). The most sacred Srichakra is kept in goddess Kamakshi shrine. We will have an opportunity to worship here other gods Bhimeswara, Nanjundeswara, Arunachaleswara and Chandramouleswara.
On full Moon days (purnami) there will be religious function, as it is an important day for performing pooja to Lord and especially to goddess Parvathi and other female gods. I have attended functions on Karthik Poornima, Ugadi, Kamakshimatha Pallaki and yearly Brahmotsava and others. Thousands of devotees gather in temple to offer their prayers on all such occasions.
To reach Lord Someshwara Swamy Temple at Ulsoor you should go to Ulsoor Police station bus stop and find
Sri Sameshwara Swamy Temple Road, Bangalore 560 008. Temple timings are 6 am to 12 noon and 4 to 9 pm.
There is another equally important historical and ancient temple of 12th century dedicated to Lord Someswara at Old Madiwala in Bangalore (Bengaluru). It is believed to be "Swayambhu" Shivalinga in the Sanctum Sanctorum, since the idol of Shivalinga is formed by natural Rock formation. It is of Chola period, having number inscriptions in Tamil on outer walls of temple, dating back to 1247AD.
Normal or routine poojas done in these temples are Rudra Abhishekam,Panchamrutha Abhishekam, Kshira (Milk) Abhishekam and Arachana, ofcourse on payment of prescribed fee. Welcome to Bangalore to enjoy your holiday tour.

I visited this Temple after the visit of British P.M Theresa May and was completely blown off by its cleanliness, serenity, simplicity and devotion. The 16th Century Chola architecture was at its usual best.
