The area

Neighborhood: Cubbon Park
In the heart of the city’s business hub is Bangalore’s most favourite garden. Cubbon Park is a beautifully maintained 120-hectare garden where all the local residents of the city take a break. A landmark ‘lung’ area of Bengaluru, the gardens are dotted with a lot of colonial heritage and charm, which are today a part of the state capital’s political centre. Home to the red-painted Gothic style State Central Library, the magnificent Vidhan Souda built in Mysore Neo-Dravidian architectural style, the neoclassical Attara Kacheri built in 1864 and housing the High Court, oldest museums and GPO in its vicinity, a trip to Cubbon Park is a great heritage walk. Sundays at the park are quite a treat with a plethora of activities to choose from - concerts, fun runs, yoga, tiny farmers market, the list is endless.
How to get there
  • Cubbon Park • 7 min walk

It’s shameful how badly these beautiful artifacts are presented, kept and protected. Awful lighting, dirty cases, badly maintained. I was really upset to see India’s heritage treated this way, toilets were revolting. No cafe or shop. The whole place hadn’t been cleaned for ages. I have no idea why this is not given more attention, it’s disrespectful. The tech museum next door has all the features of a good centre/museum so Bangalore knows how to do it properly.

I expected a lot when I heard the name 'Government Museum" and read some of the reviews. I expected less when I was standing in front of the place and realizing how small it actually was. The disappointment started when I went inside.
The rooms which are filled aren't all that bad in the museum part - artifacts from ancient times and statues, just what you'd expect. It gets a little frustrating though when you realize that of this already small place only 2 medium sized rooms are actually filled with exhibits an the rest is empty and closed of. A similar picture in the art part - one room actually filled with a few exhibits. One room filled with paintings of local elementary school children from a recent school project. The rest closed off. Very disappointing visit.

The only upside was that it was only 4 rs to get inside, but yeah...

I visited this museum yesterday and the woman at the counter tried to rip me off before I'd even set foot in the building. Entry is 20 rupees for all, i paid with a 100 note and she claimed she had no change, printed my tickets and went to serve the next person. I then told her i had the correct change (after emptying my purse of coins etc) which she took. I then had to ask twice for my 100 rupee note back which she had not put in the cash drawer, but on her lap. The person after me paid with a note and surprise surprise she had change. Obviously trying to rip me off because I'm a foreigner. Terrible start.

Museum itself is not well kept, downstairs is some pottery, upstairs are some interesting paintings and instruments. The art gallery is average.

The entry fee is only 4 rupees, and the location is very close to the British Library, Science Museum, Aquarium, and Cubbon Park. I think this is a great stop if you have a free hour, and don't want to spend a lot of money. The artwork, instruments, and other artifacts are very interesting to look at, however, as someone who is unfamiliar with Indian art and history, I did not learn very much. No pamphlets, audio guides, or tours to help you learn about what you are looking at. The labels are very basic, perhaps listing what dates the displayed pieces came from, but that is about it. But the gallery is great for quick stop if you want to take in some Indian artwork and only want to pay 4 rupees.

If you love books and Libraries, this is a small beautiful place to visit. It feels old and dusty and the books are the same. A large selection of Indian history for you to browse. The architecture on the inside is just wonderful to look at. It is situated in the middle of Cubbon Park so after walking in the park you can stop here for an hour.

Venkatappa Art Gallery (VAG) is located on Kasturba road, near MG Road, Cubbon Park area and adjacent to Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum. It attracts artists and art lovers from all over Karnataka and visitors from other places too.

Definitely worth a visit if you happen to be touring in the area.

Government museum bangalore, the second oldest museum in South India is located in the kasturba road bangalore is one of the greatest attractions here. It's now an archaeological museum with variety of collections of jewellery coins and inscriptions. We can reach here by public transport. It's well maintained and there is an entry fee to this place. It's so informative for the kids and it's a nice place for spending the leisure time with family. Altogether it's a good place to visit in bangalore.

We went here because it was not far from where we stayed and we like museums. This is reported to be quite an old museum. Some of the artifacts were quite ancient. The entrance fee was really cheap and there were quite a few people visiting while we were there. I especially liked the musical instruments on display. This museum has a lot of potential, meaning descriptions and an presentation could be updated. The art museum was interesting too. Venkatappa was quite an artist! Some of his landscapes are amazing.

This is a place full of knowledge and is a pure treasure for those who seek an insight to the human species’ evolution.
It has a collection of all the remaining found as a proof on the evolution of Karnataka history as well as the century wise enhancement of mankind.
The ground floor has all the descriptions of Karnataka history when the Mughals ruled.
The first floor is full of mysore style paintings. There is another hall in the building where all the sculptures like the Buddha and Vishnu are kept.

Then there is a building dedicated to the excellent work of art produced by Venkatappa. This is a display of all this accolades and art works.

One awesome trip to the journey of history of Karnataka and to somewhat human evolution.
