Neighborhood: Basavangudi
Close to Jayanagar and home to the Bull temple after which it was named, Basavanagudi is one of the oldest localities in the vibrant metropolitan of Bengaluru, with structures replete with character, architecture and rich history. Numerous old and beautiful temples define the true essence of this green locality filled with chirpy markets like the colourful Gandhi Bazaar, many parks with ancient trees, a wide range of unique eateries and dotted with tiny lakes. Taking a stroll here is full of Malgudi Days throwback moments since this pretty lush green neighbourhood has still retained its old-world charm, which might remind you of scenes and stories from the popular collection of short stories by RK Narayan. From a stately old spacious home that once belonged to the Diwan of Mysore, a shop in a heritage family home, a 100-year old home that has turned into a reservoir of modern art, there is a lot of cultural confluence at every step.

I came here twice on different days and it was closed both times. Even though the temple is closed, people still come to pray and the shutters are wide open enough to see the whole of the temple. It’s not actually all that big and even from the outside I can see a large statue of Ganesh in the sanctum sanctorum. The gopuram is colourful and about par by South Asian standards. Apart from that there’s little else to see.

The temple is in the far south of Bengaluru, next to the Sri Big Bull Temple. I wouldn’t go out of the way unless you have time.

A huge Ganesha idol, the elephant God catches your eye like never before, the flower decorations impress and divinity flows with a Pooja and if lucky a maha mangalarathi is a visual delight. Don't miss the bull temple next door and view the gigantic bull with a Pooja and have a lot of good food around the temple areas.

Nice experience - The HUGE Ganesh idol carved out of a single monolithic rock really catches your attention. An awesome and humbling experience.

TIPS:
- Go on a weekday - lesser rush
- Club it with a visit to the Bull temple right next door
- A visit to Mahatma Gandhi Market is a must to experience the charm of old Bangalore marketplace
- Visit to Vidhyarthi Bhavan restaurant is a must. Cheap but excellent south Indian food.

The temple that invites lakhs of devotees each year is the biggest attraction in Basavanagudi. The Dodda Ganapathi Temple along with the Big Bull Temple & the Bugle park behind is an oasis of calm & peace

Located at the centre of Bengaluru, the temple is a good attraction worth a visit. The mere size of the idol is captivating. Especially when the idol is smeared head to foot by butter "Bennai" it is treat for religiously minded. It is worthwhile to visit the Bull Temple in the vicinity and also Bugle Rock Park at the back of the Temple. The only problem is parking during week-ends and holidays.
