It’s about 2 hour drive from Leh and lots of scenic breakpoints in between. Pass tends to get very crowded so be patient while taking pictures. About 15 minutes once you get there to enjoy the surroundings. Permits are absolutely needed to pass through. Drivers can obtain them ahead of time.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 31, 2023
- Debashis TDehradun, India2,296 contributionsCovered in whitenessThe Khardung La pass is an essential stop for every tourist traveling from Leh to Nubra Valley, thanks to its stunning beauty. Despite challenging weather conditions, visitors often pause to capture the scenic surroundings, forming queues to take photos at the milestone displaying the pass's impressive height. It's crucial to be mindful of the low oxygen levels at Khardung La, prompting the advice to limit the time spent at this high-altitude location. While the allure of the landscape is undeniable, prioritizing one's well-being and acclimatization to the altitude is key when making a pitstop at Khardung La pass.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 15, 2024

It was wonderful experience. While driving from Leh to Nubra we had a short stop at the pass. - Mili821Mumbai, India336 contributionsStunning mountains breathtaking viewsOne of the highest motor-able road, the drive from leh is beautiful with winding mountains and unlimited snow mountain views. Excellent spot for half day trip. Gear up with winter clothes as it gets really cold. Due to large number of tourists, cleanliness is taking a toll. Tourist especially bikers should learn how to respect nature and people. My nephew developed breathing problems and bikers were just not ready to give us way and started fighting. Ruined our experience and it became a life threatening situation. There needs to be better parking arrangements to avoid traffic jam and noise pollution due to constant honking.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 8, 2024

- Ashish PathakMumbai, India11 contributionsAmazing place, better with snowIf you visit the pass-top while there is still snow there, it's the most amazing experience. Best time to visit is Sept-Oct when winter is starting, so it'll be cold and great experience. If you are acclimatised with enough time spent in Leh city, spending additional time here wouldn't be any problem. I visited with my family, and we had 4 days of acclimatisation in Leh City in our itinerary, and we spent 30 mins on the top of Khardung La without any issues. We were warned not to spend more than 5 mins on top due to oxygen issues, but getting your body normalised before visiting Khardung La is the best way to visit here.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 10, 2024

I was there on 21,st of Aug. Border roads made this pass reachable by vehicle. All motorists adventures ends here there programme by taking photos. Very chilly weather.Oxygen is very less. I booked my tour from Chennai through "TRIVOYA TRAVEL SOLUTIONS" The altitude is around 18000 feet MSL. There is a khardungla cafe which is at 18300 feet. Worlds highest cafe. There is a Buddha temple at Khardungla. Tri colour shines at this Highest motorable peak. All the three sides covered with snow bound mountaibs and valleys. One must go and see. Asthmatic and Heart patients please avoid this place. Most Enjoyable place.

I acquire a Leh Ladakh Thrillophilia in September 2021. I went Solo on September 07 to Leh-Ladakh.
1. Thank you Thrillophilia for organising and accommodating us in such a magnificent hotel. The hotel provided such a good and delicious food.
2.We visited and explored all the major and iconic attractions in Leh District as per our itinerary, The mighty Khardung La, Chang La, Gorgeous Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley etc.
The tour came to an end on September 12. The trip was super awesome. I had a blast with my four newly made elder friends there.
& Thanks a million Mr. Hardik Prajapati (Thrillophilia). The person with whom I remained in contact for over a months. He assisted me in booking this trip.I got some fabulous recommendations from him.

It is now second highest motorable pass in India and third in the world, as Umlingla at 19300 ft in Eastern Ladakh is highest now.
We reached there on bikes enjoying all the scenic spots on the way, specially just before the pass are scenic beautiful white clad mountain ranges. After the pass also there were ample photographic places and snow regions to play with. It is not advisable to stay at the pass for more than 15-20 minutes, as it may cause altitude sickness. Kudos to the Border Roads Organisation that they have maintained such a good road on such a high pass. Road is smooth almost at all the places barring few spots.

Khardungla is one of the famous mountain passes in Leh district, Ladakh.
Reason being at an altitude of 17982 feet, it is one of the highest motorable roads in the world!
Equally sought after by the famous Himalayan bikers and others in four wheelers , it's on the wishlist of many travellers including myself.
I was really glad to have made it here finally !!
The drive up to the pass is breathtaking...offering stark contrasts of the bare ,barren mountains ,bluest skies and deep valleys with the mighty poplar trees .
Oxygen is low at the top so it is not advisable to stop beyond 5 minutes unless one is perfectly acclimatized .

We stopped here on our way to Nubra from Leh. It was really cold and crowded when we arrived. Everyone wants to get pictures at the board :)
But this place offers some amazing views. It was full of snow even in July.
TIP: Walk slowly when you're here. The air is thin so one can feel exhausted quickly. We were told not to spend more than 15-20 mins here to avoid any health issues like headache.

It is one of the highest motorable road in the world. We went in September and the roads are good upto some 6 kms before khardungla. While nearing the pass , the roads are in worst condition for nearly some 6 kms before the pass and also few more kms after the pass while going towards Nubra. September would be the good time for visiting Khardungla , as the roads are in good condition. But you will not able to witness snow at that time. There is a Cafe and a medical camp at Khardungla. Also SBI has opened an ATM in Khardungla recently claiming it to be the highest ATM in the world. Overall a nice experience.

Hi , I'm planning to visit Khadungla Pass in July, after spending 5 days in Sirinagar. I am wondering, do I have to spend 2 days in Leh to get acclimatised, before moving on to Khadungla? Also would I be able to experience any snow if I visited early to mid July?
Written May 6, 2024
Kashmir is at 6000 ft altitude and Khardungla is at 17,000+ . 1 day should be enough in Leh. Do rent oxygen tank just in case you have issues. Start to take altitude sickness medication based on prescription.

One more question dear sjindals... If I couldn't see snowfall in khardungla in September first few days so can I see only snow there at which snow must have fallen already.
Written July 25, 2019
Yes, I went in June 1st week. There was snow all over. Khardungla is always covered with Snow.

We are travelling to KhardungLa during end of July. So do we need to wear snow boots? If yes, are snow boots available on rent at khardungla?
Written June 24, 2019
No, Snow boots required. You should wear a warm jacket, Cap, sports shoes, gloves. for precaution just buy oxygen cylinder as Oxygen level goes low and some people feel uneasy, you can keep it in car and when you go back chemist takes back after deducting 200-300 RS. It costs approx 600 or 650. Carry your water bottles and some food or snacks as you don't get much to eat.

Is permit required for just going to kardug la pass by public transport
Written June 2, 2019
Yes, you need Innerline Permit for Khardungla Pass. Actually, this permit is mandatory for all the citizens who do not belong to Jammu and Kashmir State. As far as I know, there is no public transport on the way to khardungla pass, however, you can get shared vehicles from Leh.
