A temple that underlines the engineering skills of EME people. The aluminium canopy makes any whisper inside the temple audible clearly everywhere in the temple. Even more surprising was the wealth of old statues excavated during many of EME projects. The collection spans many centuries from perhaps 5th to 12 century being the most part of the collection. Went there with an expectation to offer pooja to deities, but came back with additional experience of our rich cultural heritage.

he EME Temple or "Dakshinamurty Temple" is a Shiva Temple built by the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) Corps. of Indian Army Authorities. It has incorporated holy symbols of all religions in one place as they do not have separate places of worship for different faiths. EME temple is refelction of "Sarva Dharma Sambhav." It is a unique in concept & design, geodesic structure covered with aluminium sheets. This is good place for meditation. Temple is surrounded by a garden featuring a rich collection of 106 ancient statues from the 6th to the 16th centuries. Photography is strictly prohibited in this temple and thus visitors are not allowed to carry any kind of cameras inside.
Timing for visit is 6.30AM to 8.30PM. Anyone visiting Vadodara, must visit EME temple.

We have just returned from the Temple which is a citadel of five religions under the giant shades of five banyan trees in Fatehganj - Sama area of Vadodara . Founder Commandant of EME School at Vadodara , late brig . A . F . Eugene envisaged this the most secular temple of this kind in India . His ideas were shaped by late Madhav Aachwal , former Head of Architecture Department , Faculty of Tech & Engg . The M s university of Baroda . The Temple was built voluntary labour of officers , jawans and civilians of the EME school over 14 months and completed in 1965 .
Four entrance doors made in semi elliptical shape represents Jainism .
Sabha Mandap in shape of geodesic dome depicts Islam .
Top of dome with golden colour resembles various Buddhist monasteries .
22 m high tower reminds Christianity .
The Kalash at the top of the tower represents Hinduism .
The main deity of the aluminium Temple is Gyan Dakshinamurty .
There are temples of Radha Krishna , Ram , Lakshman & Sita , and Gautam Buddha are on the left hand side and those of Barfila Shiv , Hanuman , Durga , Ganesh , & Saibaba are behind the main Temple .
But the main attractions are the various depleted but articulately carved sculptures of bygone era collected from all over India by the officers and jawans of the EME school and beautifully exhibited on the sides of the pathways . The sculptures are ancient and rare . These are :
Saptarshi from 6th Century .
Brahmani , Ganesh , Indrani , Maheshwari , Mahishasur Mardini , Saint & Chamar Dharini , Vaishnavi , Vireshwar, Varahi and Vayavi from 7th Century .
Mahishasur Mardini from 8th Century .
Chamar Dharini , Gauri Shankar ,Shankar Parvati ,Shiv Parvati and Veena Dharini are from 9th Century .
Agneyi , Chamundi ,Gadadhar Vishnu , Indrani , Maheshwari , Mahishasur Mardini ,Sun God , Vaishnavi ,Virbhadra , and Vishnu are from 10th Century .
Bhairav ,Hans Dharini Kaumari , Flying God and , Varahi are from 11th Century .
Brahma , Brahmani , Indrani , Parvati , Rati Kamdeo , Saraswati and Shiv Parvati are from 12th Century .
Apsara and Vaishnava are from 14th Century .
Ganesh ,Muni and Rishi & Nartaki are from 15th Century .
Out of the above sculptures the most impressive is the Sun God image from 1oth Century . It shows the complete union of the Sun , right from his chariot with seven horses , Aroon with leashes & flanked by Dand , Pingala , Usha & Pratyusha and hallow .
I am proud to be Vadodarian as we possesed this unique Temple .

Dakshinamoorthy Shiva facing south and is in human form with his feet pressing down devil in form of all the distractions which does not allow a student a seeker to focus on the work given or a study..or achieve given goals. This has been a icon for all EME Army student jawans who come from all over India to train at this unique army college of engineering in Baroda Gujarat. The YOUTh need religious place to relax too.So in 1950's Col Euegene encourage the faculties themselves to design the temple for students.Old scrap aluminium said to be of airplanes? was moulded into a Huge open Dome with perfect arch es all around backed by tall Tower .All the aspects of its architecture are supposed to represent various facades of all religions.Under the tower was installed a black Human sitting form of Shiva as a Guru of all gurus in Indian Ethos. The temple is at center of great garden with huge banyan and other trees.the path is decorated by a collection of best icons in stone real archaeological finds by the army of most Gods and goddesses you can count. There are perfect Shiva parvati,Vishnu,Surya even a Brahma standing tall! There are 36 mahishasur mardinis in this and great dancing ganesha of 1000 years old now spoiled by -painting it!!The past serene atmosphere is now gone as music and loud bhajans by students EME men resounds .A Amarnath Gufa attracts children. But surya and saraswati statue are unique heritage all India can be proud of.New Buddha statue by son of Sculptor Haldankar ji who made Shiva statue is a super work or art.The visit of vadodara is totally incomplete without you spend your evening here.Security checks are now norm but still you will not see such a temple now with added deities according to demands of new EME men around this unique dome and tower aluminium all religion motif architecture unique to vadodara the cultural capital the city named after banyan trees.Do not miss it.(photography /mobiles banned ,take your ID ,as army area)

Excellent place where peace of mind is guaranteed. I visited in the evening and found the temple in very good maintenance condition in terms of cleanliness and ambience. The ancient statues dating back to 7-10th century , positioned all over the garden and surroundings makes it an interesting place indeed. The temple as such is unique in its construction using special metal and signifying the combination of various religions is good testimony of religious inclusiveness. The garden with fountain and nice walk-ways ensures we get to spend a relaxed time in peaceful ambience. A cave kind of structure was also unique. Overall perfect place to pray / relax and get some peace away from hustle bustle of the city.

Its an amazing temple, best part it is managed by EME. A very peaceful place, you actually feel closer to HIM. Best time to visit, early mornings or in the evenings during weekdays.

a very well maintained temple by Indian Army in the heart of Vadodara city. You can visit the temple thru two routes i.e Fatehgunj side and other from Sama (Methodist church/Navrachna school side). There is no entry free. Keep valid ID with you which has to be deposited at gate. There is plenty of parking facility for 4 wheelers and 2 wheelers. Temple is calm and serene. Garden is well maintained. A perfect place to spend the evening. But don't think of playing football or Cricket in garden like visitors do in Kamatibaug (Sayajibaug).
There is heavy rush to the temple during Janmashtmi with queues stretching 1 kms for darshan.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT : Rickshaw or cabs can take you only to the gate of Cantonment. From fatehgunj side then you have to barely walk 200mtrs . From Sama (Methodist church/Navrachna school side) you have to walk 1/2 kms
