About
This temple is the first temple of the Swaminarayan sect to have been built. In 1822, the land was given by the British government to do so, and Swaminarayan himself entrusted the responsibility for the construction of the temple to Ananandanand Swami. The temple is carved in Burmese teak, and every arch and bracket is painted with bright colors, a defining characteristic of Swaminarayan temples everywhere. There are several idols installed by Swaminarayan himself, as well as a display of some of his personal items and sculptures. In the adjoining haveli, there are quarters for pilgrims of the sect, a special section for women, and an area where ceremonies and teaching sessions are held for women only. Located near Kalupur in the eastern part of the old city, the Swaminarayan Temple is a splash of color in the midst of the city’s grey and is also the starting point for the Heritage Walk through the pols of the old city.

Our Old Ahmedabad heritage walk began at the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kalupur. This Temple was the first one to be constructed by the Swaminarayan Sampraday... The carvings are intricate! The art depicts auspicious symbols.

The gate is no less ornate... In one part of the temple, Swaminarayan's personal items are displayed! It was interesting to find out the land for construction of this shrine was gifted by the British.

Lord Swaminarayan first came to Amdavad as Nilkanth Varni in 1799 staying at Lake Kankaria. He visited the city many times, often celebrating the festival of Fuldol here. He frequently bathed in the River Sabarmati, passing en-route, through a fruit orchard in the area known as Shahibaug. Lord Swaminarayan built the first ever Swaminarayan mandir in the Kalupur area of Amdavad in the year 1822, installing the images of Nara and Narayan.
History

Lord Swaminarayan gave darshan to a devotee, Ashabhai, that a mandir of true upasana would soon spring forth in Amdavad. It was also Shastriji Maharaj's wish that an Akshar Purushottam mandir be built in Amdavad. To this end, an old bungalow was purchased in the area of Shahibaug - the fruit orchard which had been sanctified by Lord Swaminarayan. The bungalow was converted into a small Hari mandir and a small image of Lalji Maharaj was installed. At this site, Yogiji Maharaj later constructed a 5-spired mandir and fulfiled his guru's wish.

Even for an atheist like me, the experience was good. As I have already shared in another review, the presentation is really nice. especially the small museum just beneath the main temple complex and not to forget the after dark show that is marvelous and probably one of its kind in India.

one of the peaceful and holy place in Ahmedabad.
We stayed overnight as the temple have dharmashala and stay for devotees and general public at very cheaper rates than hotel.
Temple has got its own Prasadalay where in one can eat holy Prasad or meal.
Must visit place for all ages.

The construction of the mandir is really brilliant. The best part of it is its area and cleanliness .So many people are doing their duties restlessly and keeping the mandir clean.

This temple is a wonderful shrine as well as an architectural beauty. It is free of the commercialism of the usual Akshardham temples built in honour of Shri Swaminarayan, and hence has a peaceful and holy appearance. Worth many visits even if you do not belong to their religious sect.

We went to the Sound & Light show at the Swaminarayan temple in Ahmedabad and loved it. The quality of acoustics, the usage of sound, laser, fire, water was amazing. The mythological story is very well narrated unfortunately it is narrated in Hindi and not in English but is not difficult to understand. The open theatre is well maintained. If you happen to be in Ahmedabad and this sound and light show is scheduled it is highly recommeded because not too sure if this happens all through the year.
