This history of Chandigarh is related to the independence movement in India. This museum tells the history of the different projects for a new city. The museum is modest but essential to know the political links between the architecture and development.

The Chandigarh Architecture Museum was set up in 1997 to document, preserve and showcase rare documents, drawings, sketches and archives etc. pertaining to the making of Chandigarh. The museum showcases in an imaginative manner the entire history of the evolution of Chandigarh and the teams behind its final form. The well explained drawings and documents displayed here along with the original furniture of Pierre Jeanneret are a must-see for the casual and scholarly visitor alike. The sculptural building designed by architect S.D.Sharma, was adapted from a structure designed by Le Corbusier as an Exhibition Pavilion at Zurich, in 1965.At the basement level the display unfolds the trauma of partition of the country and the necessity to build the new capital city of Chandigarh. The exhibits in this section focus on the selection of Mayer and Nowicki and the blueprints of the plans for Chandigarh which are usually refered to as the Mayer plans. On the ground level is displayed material pertaining to the arrival of Corbusier and his team comprising of Pierre Jeanneret, Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry. The detailed philosophy and contents of each component is explained through studies, sketches and drawings prepared by Corbusier personally as well as by his team of foreign and Indian architects. This floor houses the theme of “Chandigarh today and tomorrow.” The first floor displays the city’s growth after the first phase and the departure of Corbusier and his foreign associates.
A visit to the Chandigarh Architecture Museum promises to be an enlightening and informative experience and they can organise conducted tours with a trained guide for school and college students and groups of tourists or even curious citizens on all weekdays except Mondays and gazetted holidays. Worth a visit if you really need to know the fascinating story of the creation and development of India's first modern planned city.

This museum, even if old, is really well made and interesting. It comes back to the entire history of the city, from the original idea to the actual building. All these complemented with original documents showing how architects were working back then. A really good stop among the other visits in town.

It helps you see the history behind this beautiful city. From the letters and the furniture you are able to just imagine how things came together to make this city what it is now.
