Gol Ghar is a popular tourist place in Patna. Situated Ina park it is a dome shaped building. Actually built as a granary for the British Garrison stationed there in 1780s, it stands tall.
The views from the top are said to be awesome but nownclimbing the building is prohibited.
It serves as a nice picnic spot and many families and kids come over to spend evening

You have a nice view, but you have to be willing to walk the stairs along with all the others who want to have a look! and there were a lot when I was there!!...
The park is not special, but more quiet, cleaner and more peaceful than outside it's walls, so one of those few places where you can relax a bit.

Golghar is one such monument which is unique to the city and has connect to British Raj and Buddhism. After the devastating famine of 1770, which killed nearly 10 million people in regions of Bengal, Bihar and modern day Bangladesh, Warren Hastings, then Governor-General of India, ordered the construction of this beehive shaped structure for the purpose of storing grains for the British Army. It was conceived and built by Captain John Garstin, an engineer with the East India Company, and has a storage capacity of 140000 tons, it construction was completed on 20 July 1786. There is hardly any visitor to erstwhile Patliputra who has not climbed the steps of Golghar. The view for the top is awesome. The complex has recently undergone extensive renovation and a sound and light show added to it. The climb is steep and should not be attempted by the frail hearted. A grand view of this structure can be seen from Pind Balluchi atop Biscomaun Bhawan.

Golghar in patna can be termed as city icon which came into existence way back in 1786 for the primary purpose of storing grains. Its hemispherical convex from upwards. With 127 you would get tired to reach the summit but the breathtaking view of the entire city from there is worth it.

Ancient landmark … There is nothing much to see here but If you are passing from Gandhi Maidan then do visit to this place. Do a little exercise to reach at top as there is no alternate option to climb up other than stairs. Once you reach at top you can see the Beautiful Ganga River clearly. You and take a landscape view of Ganga and nearby Patna.

Captain Garstin, an Officer with the East India Company, had this granary built in 1786, after a famine hit the Eastern parts of India- Bihar and Bengal killing almost 8 to 10 million people.
A wonderful construction in the shape of a Stupa, this granary has a height of about 30 metres and is circular in shape. There are about 150 spiral steps leading up to the top of the Gol Ghar from where one can see the entire Patna and Ganges.
Wonderful architectural design has been put into place giving this structure a historical significance.

The Golghar {the literal meaning Round house} is located to the west of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, capital of Bihar state, India.
After the devastating famine of 1770, which killed nearly 10 million people in regions of Bengal, Bihar and modern day Bangladesh, Warren Hastings, then Governor-General of India, ordered the construction of this beehive shaped structure for the purpose of storing grains for the British Army. It was conceived and built by Captain John Garstin, an engineer with the East India Company, and has a storage capacity of 1400000 tons, it construction was completed on 20 July 1786.
Built in the native Stupa architecture, the building has a foundation of 125m, and a height of 29 m. It is pillarless with a wall of thickness of 3.6 m at the base. One can climb atop the Golghar through the 141 steps of its spiral stairway around the monument.
From the top of the Golghar one can have a wonderful panoramic view of the Patna city and the River Ganga flowing nearby.

A long way to the top through a never ending stair case and you can see the entire city of Patna along with the holy Ganges. This was supposed to be a Granary which was ordered by the Governor General on 20th Jan 1984 for the prepetual prevention of famine in the Provinces. This granary was erected by Captain John Garstin and completed on 17th Jul 1986. Could have been well maintained by the Tourism Department and made more attractive.
