We had visited Birla Planetarium during our sightseeing in Hyderabad. Tickets are priced at 100 rupees per person and there are shows in English and local languages at different times of the day. From the parking lot one has to walk up an inclined path to reach the Planetarium building at the top. We enjoyed the beautiful architecture of the building and the show about planets.

The show starts only if there are 15 people. So it is advisable to first visit the science museum. In case the no of people wanting to see the show is 15, the security guards in the museum will tell you. You can they buy the ticket, watch the show and return to the science museum to complete your visit. This way you will optimize your time.

The show changes. When we were there they were showing a film on Mars. One of the first planetariums in India it gives you a great space travel feel. After the show you move on to a different room where you see a 3D film on underwater corals.

Not much of space travel fan, we enjoyed the underwater 3D show more.

It not only educates but also entertains its visitors in different ways. Birla Planetarium in Hyderabad presents international standards of presentation, which has been rated among the best and highly visited planetariums of the world. Its cosmic presentation can be easily considered at par with those in Europe, Japan and the US. It is a place for everyone and can be afforded by everyone too as the Birla Planetarium entry fee is also minimal. However, kids below the age of 4 years are not allowed for the sky show.

I went to watch the hindi show as i felt i would understand the galaxies and stars better in my native language, but i was proved wrong during the show. The language used is pure hindi where they used terms like "dhumketu" for comets and similarly some other words for asteroids and describe their interactions again in very uncommon hindi terms . It was very pure hindi which we dont use in our day to day language and thus made it little difficult for me to understand. I would prefer the english show going forward. Otherwise, every thing was just great about this place and the show.
(No offence to others who may find this more easier to understand, this is purely my experience)

Points to remember:
1) Kids below 5 years are no allowed
2) Be there 20-30 minutes before the show time else you may not be given the ticket
3) Visit their website to decide which show you want to attend depending on the choice of language http://www.birlasciencecentre.org/planetarium/

Coming to the experience, it is not something out of this world. The show is for 40 minutes but the actual planetarium experience is not more than 10 minutes. For the remaining 30 minutes, they will take you through powerpoint slides on Mangalyaan etc. It is a pretty small set-up and may not awe you. I have been to the planetarium in Patna and it was surelu huge as compared to this one. Tickets are for Rs 50. Try to sit on the last rows to have a comfortable view.

Over-all, just a one time watch. You may keep few hours in hand to visit the museum and temple. My wife visited the museum along with my 1 year old kid who was not allowed entry to the planetarium and she spoke good about the museum experience. The ticket for museum is pretty steep at Rs 75 each but she said it was worth it.

Great Science Museum with easy to understand instructions. Good learning for kids and arouse interest.
Planetarium was good. the show was of 40 minutes and explained great deal of mars. Could have made it more interesting by covering more constellations.
On clear sky night you can visit observatory. it is worth.

Very unfortunately the basic concept of planetorium has been changed to small theater where maangal yan (mars tour) is presented with pictures that of poor quality. Planetorium doom and the special projector is mearly used. Very disappointing

It brings back memories of how my parents too me there when I was a little boy. Now I am taking my kids to visit the place. Must say that the authorities are doing a good job in maintaining the place. A nice, cool and peaceful place. Lovely view of the skyline
