It's so good for walking alone or with family and children's or even with your dog. It's so safe even in midnight. You can see sunset or sunrise in this boulevard. You can rent bycicle or scooter or motorcycle for one hour and ride this boulevard.

I'm sure walking the Boulevard would be more fun on a brilliant, sunny day. But on a grey, rainy morning, I found it a depressing experience : everything closed and looking empty, desolate. Bad drainage, deep puddles everywhere.

Best place at Batumi. Enjoy cycling, ice cream and coffee. This place is fabulous and I am very glad that I visited it. It is just comfy and peaceful and at the same time you can make it fun by cycling, jogging or family picnic.

The local we were flying with suggested to have bike ride along but we decided to walk all the way from Alphabetical Tower to Carefour shopping mall. Nice walk, stopped for some drink, icecream or just relax in the shadow. Definitely suggesting walking then biking.

It is my first time in Batumi and I was lucky enough to stay near this seaside park because I like jogging every morning. The park is incredible, next to the black sea beach, beautiful nature and great promenade. Very cozy and quite in the mornings. Visit it definetely when in Batumi.

This real great place to have different activities. You can jogging, cycling, walking etc. It is very long with separate place for walking and cycling. From one side surrounded by green parks from other side by sea. There is a lot of places where you can sit for rest and also many places where you can buy water, coffee etc and some snacks. It is perfect for watching sunset.

Pretty uninspirational but you’ve got to walk along this strip. I believe it goes for 7km.

It’s a bit like an old broken down fair ground stretched out along a rocky beach filled with loud music.

Maybe I’m just getting old but this isn’t my type of holiday. But it is an experience.

Our experiences from Holidays in Batumi - August 2012 / 1 week

Expectations:

- exotic holidays for a couple, with friendly people, lot of fun, relax, sun, good restaurants
- we have seen mostly everything so we wanted to explore some new destination, which shall be Batumi.
It is thru - we were partially blended by great marketing of Batumi/Georgia in Polish TV / books etc

What we got:

1) Weather - nobody says before and You will not find it in anykind of travel guide - the weather in Batumi in August can be a completely deasaster. And it was in our case. from 7 days we had 1,5 day of sun. In the rest of time it was raining, what makes anykind of activities practically impossible. The same situation was 1 week before us.

Why it is like this? Because in the closest neighbourhood to the coast there are mountains over 2000 m high. So Batumi is located on the east coast of black sea, with most western and south western wind. That causes that the clouds are blocked by the Batumi mountains and are cumulated there for days.

2) People - we read that there are very friendly and open people beying happy to meet the visitors. Unfortunatelly we didn't meet them. Our experience was that the georgian people are very closed, they are not used to deal with foreigners, and they generally don't like them. They accept polish people because of help in war against russians, but that is all. Don't expect much especially not the hospitality.

3) Food/restaurants - the main traditional dishes are dumplings and baked bread with chease and eggs. In Batumi there are not many restaturants and especially not so much local restaurants.

The georgian people mentality is not a service mentality, so be prepared that ordering a food will take 45 min to 1 hour, or that You receive somethings else then ordered. english is very seldom spoken and understood so mostly the communication can be done in russian.

We have not visit all restaurants but our range is as follow:

1) Grill bar - turkish restaurant
2) Ukrainochka
3) Local one in center of Batumi - we forgot the name

4) Hotels - We have been in Sheraton, which is generally ok, but also nothing special for 5 stars. There is also Radisson, but we havent been there. I will not recommend to stay somwhere else.

5) Nightlife - Generally there are a couple of places to go out. Especially the night clubs on the boulevards made us a big hope (Soho and Sector 26). Soho is a club where the security guys are the most important, strange people You will not fill comfortable there. Very expensive drinks, which You can got in sheraton for half of this price. They offer You also a reservation fee for a table of app. 100 EUR which You can use later for drinks. I think that was only offer for foreigners. So we have been there once.

What we can recommend is Nightclub of Sheraton, which starts to be interesting about 1 am.

There is also a vox club which should be ok - but we havent been there

6) Traffic - don't drive a car there. Especially not outside of the city. There are free cows running on the street, which You will not see during heavy raining.

Also it is not easy to be a pedestrian there - the cars will for sure not stop before zebra

7) What we can recommend - for sure the dolphinarium. You can swim with doplphins app. 20 min, for 75 EUR. The people there are profesionall, funny and very friendly. Also the shows are very good

comparision on the scala of 0-10 (stay in 5 star hotel):

1. Thailand 10
2. Turkey 7-8
..Georgia 2

So - there are better places to spend holidays then Batumi.

Before I traveled to Batumi I tried everything to find out more about the Batumi rental bicycle system, but in vain, therefor let me help my fellow travelers!
Batumi really invested in bicycles, there are bicycle paths on the Boulevard, but also in the city (though cluttered with parked cars). One evening I had a dinner in restaurant Megrul-Lazuri that is about 5 k out of town, and I tried to get there by bicycle, but did not manage.. the first 4 k were fine alongside the water, then it became a bit "mountainbikish" over pebbles etc, and finally it became too dangerous to go any further since the road did not have any space on the sides and cars were speeding by, so I had to go back to Batumi...
How does Batumvelo work? In some info I read that you needed a Georgian mobile, but this is not required (anymore). You need to go to the tourist information boot near the dancing fountains, pay 20 lari, get a card, and off you go. In theory. First, the lady manning Batumvelo is not the same as the one giving tourist information. The Batumvelo lady is mostly not there, she is supposed to be there between about 10:00 --13:00 and 14:00 - 19:00 but do not count on her presence then. Further, she is not interested in Batumvelo so one wonders why she has this job at all. She prefers to be on her Iphone the whole time and finds it a nuisance to serve you, or explain the system. She also told me I was only allowed to ride on the Boulevard? (not true) and that the bikes do not have a lock, while I pointed out a lock to her, she was very annoyed.
The system itself: First, Batumi need to be congratulated for investing in bicycles. That said, it is not working the way it should be. Great that instructions are in English as well! Since it was already out of season, many bike stations did not operate anymore. Some looked like they were operational (there were bikes there) but then you could not log in. One time I could not return a bike, since my key could not be returned in the designated slot, so I had to pay 6 lari instead of 0.5 lari. When I later complained, I was told that I should have gone to another station and thus it was my fault. Though all is new, some bikes (made in France) need some maintenance (like baskets coming loose, and locks not operational) but generally, they are in good working order. The (rear)lights are not the best, so be extra careful when driving at night.
But overall great that Batumvelo is there!!
