The beautiful church is situated near the equally beautiful Piazza square and with its Italian themed design provides a contrast to the Italian themed square. It looks quite modern but actually dates back to the late nineteenth century. The church was built by the city's Greek community. It is built of layers of light and dark materials giving it an Ablaq pattern reminiscent of Byzantine architecture. Two towers with golden cupolas rise from the roof of the church. A mosaic of St. Nicholas adorns a corner of the church walls.

The original structure dates from 1871, a time when the Greek presence in Batumi was considerable (over 10% of the city population). After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1989, most of the remaining Greeks left the city, even though some of them had been living here for centuries. According to a 2002 census there were just over 500 left in the city. A thorough renovation of the church took place in 1998/1999.
