The beautiful church is situated near the equally beautiful Piazza square and with its Italian themed design provides a contrast to the Italian themed square. It looks quite modern but actually dates back to the late nineteenth century.
The church was built by the city's Greek community. It is built of layers of light and dark materials giving it an Ablaq pattern reminiscent of Byzantine architecture. Two towers with golden cupolas rise from the roof of the church. A mosaic of St. Nicholas adorns a corner of the church walls.

A good experience but then I like churches. I like the smoky dark atmosphere and it provides pleasant relief from the chaos of a tourism city. Listened to a service in Georgian and it was soothing.

The original structure dates from 1871, a time when the Greek presence in Batumi was considerable (over 10% of the city population). After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1989, most of the remaining Greeks left the city, even though some of them had been living here for centuries. According to a 2002 census there were just over 500 left in the city.
A thorough renovation of the church took place in 1998/1999.

The interior is very detailed and interesting if you like architecture and frescoes. There are also numerous paintings. The lighting with the frescoes is interesting and worth a stop if you are already in the area. Please be respectful of those who may be worshiping during your visit.

Church in old Batumi, build during Ottoman Empire. What I remember about this church is that, sultan allowed to built this church only without bells.
It has different architecture style from other church.

This more than 150 years old church is located in the very center of Batumi and it is one of the oldest churches in the city. An initiator of construction of the Church was the Greek mayor of Batumi Ilya Efremidi, that's why church's architecture is so different. Church is a few steps from Piazza square. If you like old buildings and churches you should definitely visit it.

I would strongly suggest to take a moment to visit this church. It is beautiful architecturally and one should include it in walking tour of the old town

looks quite out of place and not so "ancient" but more like a contemporary disguised as old. you walk by anyways when on the boulevard...
