A brutal history but atmospheric and beautiful
Feb 2020
The history of these islands makes hard reading. Now they are a haven for wildlife and a holiday retreat. It was one of the most interesting calls on our cruise.

magnificent

if you are fortunate with good weather - then nothing beats this visit. Make sure to book with an organizer who takes you not only to Iles du Royal, but also around the island and also to Iles du Josef

Incredible wildlife and scenery
Feb 2019 • Solo
I travelled to the islands today with the team at Tropic Alizes. It was an incredible day steeped in history and beautiful scenery. I won’t rapidly forget the beach at Ile St Joseph or the view from the restaurant at the top of Ile Royale. Fantastic trip absolutely worth taking during your visit to French Guyana

Devil's Island is Hellish

Signage is nonexistent or terrible. Walkways are to be negotiated only by able bodied folks. Cells are open and free to enjoy just watch your step. Monkeys are fun to watch.

Once in a lifetime experience

Our cruise ship anchored offshore for the day. We were given five hours of free time to explore. There are no guides and one bathroom. The restaurant and museum at the top are wonderful. The island beautiful. There is a 3 km path around the island but you will want to spend most of you time at the top near the Governor’s home.

Trip to Ile de Salut/Devils Island
Nov 2018
Lovely all day boat trip from 0830 t0 1630 travelling out to the Islands and given the whole day to explore this former French Penal colony. Not to be missed especially if fan of Papillion!

Could be better with a little expenditure
Nov 2018 • Couples
Signage throughout is sparse and exclusively in French. With a little more expenditure it could be vastly improved. Bearing in mind the islands popularity with cruise ships it is a necessity. Not sure they fully realise what a good tourist attraction they have here. Gift shop is very poor too.

There are 3 islands but only 2 you can visit. Iles du Salute is a great island but sadly in need of a serious clean up. The hotel is basic , very expensive, no access to Wi-Fi . NO FRESH WATER IN THE ISLAND

A Full Day Trip
Sep 2018 • Couples
The three islands lie off Kourou. Usually one takes a Catalan for the crossing to the islands. Between the islands there is a smaller boat which is difficult to board so beware. The terrain under foot is varies with uneven paths, steps and some rough ground. It is advisable to wear some good shoes. There are some ascents which are slightly difficult due to the hot weather.

The views are excellent. As to the history the buildings are split between the islands with some being reclaimed by the vegetation. The buildings are very similar to those at the Transportation Centre in St. Laurent du Moroni in style and use.

The location seems too benign to be a prison. Arachnophobes should be alert as there are large ones on the islands. More "friendly" wildlife may be found

Beautiful island
Mar 2018 • Couples
Hard to believe this was a harsh penal colony in today's beautiful weather! I guess being locked up and worked hard in this heat wasn't exactly fun though. There is an informative museum on Ile Royale which explains the history. There are paths around Ile Royale and St Joseph which take in some fantastic views. You may also see capybaras and monkeys foraging in the woods.
