It’s a church and not a very spectacular one. Poor paintings and poor “stained glass” windows. In fact, one even had an Angel on its side. If you’re British, don’t visit as it pales into comparison of our own cathedrals or Abbeys. You’ll just feel disappointed.

Friendly security at the gate. What an amazing church to visit and reflect upon. A must visit. Worth paying for a guide.

I booked a Hurghada your and the church was part of it. The church is not very special, but the story is.

Apparently, in the old days ‘Coptic ’ meant Egyptian and Christian as well. Nowadays, when you say you’re Coptic, you mean you’re Christian. In the old days, there were hardly any moslims in Egypt so their was no need for distinction.

The church itself is white and the glass in lead is made with bright colours. Churches are usually dark and somber, but this was bright and happy.

That being said, it’s the only positive thing. It wasn’t a special church, just ordinary and plain. I did like the hospital and school, because a church also has a social function. The poor go there for schooling and for medical aid. At the gate, they offered me bread too. Very nice.

You have to pass a control gate with armed police. That is normal for religious places. It also happens at the mosque.

In short: Nice to have seen, if you haven’t seen it, you won’t miss out.

My husband and I stopped off here for about 20 minutes on a city tour of Hurghada organised by our Tui rep. Our guide for the day was very knowledgable and I think you really do need to have someone who knows about places to get the best experience.

Visited a service at the coptic Church for the second time. They have one morning service, sundays at 7.00 am and a second at 9.00 am. If you want to take communion you are supposed to fast from 12.00 pm. Everything is in arabic or coptic, so I didn´t understand a lot, but could recognize parts of it anyway. A very nice break in the vacation.

We had the Coptic Cathedral as a brief stop on our city tour yesterday. Very lovely. The smell of incense in the air as we walked in. Lovely. A service was in progress as our guide walked us around the outer edge. Very lovely.
