While most tourists seem to concentrate on ‘sun, sea and sand’, there are many who would like to know more about the country they are visiting or who would appreciate if pointed in the right direction.

There is now an El Gouna branch of the world-renowned Alexandria Library; housed in a beautiful building, imaginatively arranged inside, offering a multi-media presentation of 5,000 years of Egyptian history on a 180° screen with nine synchronised projectors. This is presented every day in four languages at different times, which your hotel can advise you on.

There are other presentations on request, including one based on a Luxor papyrus about the after-life, with the text in hieroglyphics, set to music and sung in Pharaonic Egyptian, which is fascinating. There’s an English translation, so you can follow what is happening.

You can also rent a computer to access other historical material from the main Alexandria library, or whatever else you want - and it is beautifully cool inside.

This is a must see for anyone with a feeling for history or who wants a change of pace.

An interesting place to visit, you need to book in for the relevant language performance though you might find you are the only person present. It was interesting to learn the chronology of the egyptian empire.

we had a tour and watched the Culturama show. it is quite sad that no one visits this amazing place. I think it probably needs more publicity

I share the views of MeggieMan - this is an oasis of calm in a leisurely resort area.
You are welcomed by a member of the library staff who takes you on a short conducted tour of the venue before leaving you to your own devices.
The big draw is access to the modern Alexandrian library thanks to computer links. Most of the works are in Arabic, but there are works in most languages that range across the numerous research fields.
There is a range of charges depending on how long you want to use the computers, what you want to do with the on-line publications and if you want to use the computers for emails (starting at 10LE for an hour).
There are hard copies, mainly fictional, that can be borrowed (for a fee). So why not take one from the shelves, and sit in the shade of central fountain and read to your heart's content?

Entrance cost just over £7 a head for the 45 minute show (we had a bonus film of Luxor). Its a beautiful building and the show was well worth the money. We sat in a cool courtyard between admission to the building and the start of the show.
