Not What We Expected

One can see that this formerly sleepy fishing village will continue to undergo a construction boom as expats seeking affordable real estate build upscale homes overlooking the ocean. Definitely one of the longest and nicest beaches in the area, but don’t go expecting Florida beaches. The climate here is arid and treeless yet somehow humid. What little vegetation there was has been largely stripped by heavy equipment building roads and new expat developments. Without adequate drainage and containment of the rocky clay soil, erosion will continue to be a major issue. Every time there is a (rare) heavy rain, the water naturally flows toward the lowest point (across the roads and into the ocean) bringing with it rocks, soil, trash, construction materials, trees and logs, which are eventually swept away with the tide. It’s sad that local governments have not insisted that developers shore up the infrastructure or pay environmental impact fees before beginning construction. We have great admiration of the local entrepreneurs who work tirelessly to keep the debris away, pick up the weekend trash from the beach and road, and rebuild their “steps” in order to set up rental chairs and cabanas on the beach. The drive from Manta was eye opening: many residents and businesses use the hillsides behind their homes to throw trash and rubbish. When washouts occur and there is a crater created along the roadside, it quickly becomes a local garbage dump. Recycling is not a priority and eco consciousness has yet to arrive here.

The main part of the beach is nice, although there is a lot of garbage on the ground, sadly. There were no kite surfers when I was there but that could be a fun thing to go to watch or try. I don't recommend staying here as it is quite remote. The restaurant Fish has a nice atmosphere and excellent ceviche.

Had a long walk all along the sea front here.
I would say it is more interesting than top job.
Lots of sea birds but also seemed more a working environment than touristy

We love the beach here and the beach restaurants ! There are even some turtle nests and if you are lucky, in January or February you might catch some hatchlings making their way to the ocean.

This is my beach, OK? :) don't tell anyone or other people will come ;)
Seriously, this is a hidden place, great sand, warm water, fantastic people around.
If you are there, you DO have to check out Javier's school (look for Ecuador KiteSurf) and get some lessons from the best teacher ever. Javier is a character, a great teacher that doesn't negotiate his reputation to keep you safe and improve.

A great place!!! Clean, paceful, amazing. There you could find fun, relax, good food and frinedly people. This place is close to Manta, so yo can visit in one day and have a good moment. If you are there early in the mornig you should walk to the north top of the beach and discover the best, a little beach behind the rocks!!!

We enjoyed a nice lunch at Don WIlly II, a great breakfast at Donkey Den on another day, and looking forward to my next trip to the Beach at Santa Marianita.

People looking to get out of Manta often go here. Over promised and under delivered. I have no idea why this beach is so popular.
