- ChemtrailerCanada404 contributionsA nice hike and iguanasA good day trip. You have a choice in how you want to do it: walk both ways (about an hour each way) or take a boat either from Puerto Ayora or back (~25 mins). There are no amenities so be sure to use the baños while you register at the park entrance. Take snacks and lots of water ..... Beach towels etc. If you do wish to use the boat then the ticket "booth" is the small kiosk right infront of the big supermarket, the "Proinsular" in Puerto Ayora. Price is $10/adult each way. If you plan to walk out, spend the day and then take the boat back to PA, be sure to buy your ticket before you leave because during high season there may not be enough room on the boat for you. This "boat" is not the yellow water taxis that you see everywhere. This is a private commercial company. It's a single boat that fits back and forth. For example it heads out at 11:00, then back at noon, then out at 1:00pm then back at 2:00pm and so forth. About a half dozen kayaks are available for rent at Playa Manya. The view along the non-swimable Playa Brava is quite spectacular. The second beach is pleasantly secluded and good for safe family swimming although the water visibility isn't the greatest. Lots and lots of marine iguanas.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 3, 2023

The hike is more interesting, but requires a 3+ mile walk up hills and over a long stone path through desert flora and over a beach exposed to the sun. I made the mistake of not bringing enough water as there is none in the Park. The beach has an area where marine iguanas nest, and birds of all kind run, swim and fly on, in and over the beach. The bay is sheltered with calm water. You can rent a kayak for $10 and in <1 hour paddle through the mangroves. I saw sharks, iguanas swimming and perched on shore and sea turtles popping up to breathe. Even close to shore there were baby sharks swimming in a foot of water. It’s a good place to swim as the water is calm and a comfortable temperature.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 22, 2023
- CatchBookerNew Mills, United Kingdom287 contributionsBest Beach I’ve Visited.Been to Aruba twice. Oahu, Kuaui, Maui, Jamaica, Barbados (not Turks & Caicos though) and this may be the best beach I’ve ever been on. Kayaked in the bay, went snorkelling and had a giant tortoise swim directly underneath me. Lots of black iguanas on the beach. The only thing that ruins this place (as always) is people. Only visited Santa Cruz, Floreana and Isabela but this might easily of been the most beautiful place. Incredible place.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten January 30, 2024
- ABUtah12 contributionsBaby hammerheads!!Tortuga bay is a must see if you are on Santa Cruz. It opens at 6am and closes at 5pm so keep that in mind because if you’re walking it takes around 45 mins to an hour to get there. You have to walk down the whole walking path and then once you’re on the beach you go right and walk to the end and through the trees to get to the bay. The water taxi is about 30 mins and costs $10 each way. I enjoyed the walk so if you’re able, give yourself enough time and do that. One of the coolest things you’ll see is in the shallow water of the bay, baby hammerhead sharks!!! The water is pretty murky, we brought our snorkels but didn’t even use them cause it’s really hard to see anything. Just walk along the shallow water and you should be able to see some baby hammerheads swimming really close to shore. It was definitely a highlight of our trip!!Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 21, 2024

Absolutely stunning. There is a completely paved walk; wear good shoes. And a hat! The swimming beach is a bit futher on. This is the one thing I would see on Santa Cruz.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 21, 2024
- Nicki EIllinois596 contributionsPlaya Brava—MagnificentI had limited time on Santa Cruz, so I only made it to Playa Brava—and it is spectacular! If you're walking, be prepared and have plenty of water with you. It's a narrow, paved path bordered by thick vegetation and can become quite stuffy, especially mid-day.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten September 15, 2024

We went to tortuga bay twice. The first time we were short on time and splashed around with about 100 locals on the red flag surfing beach where you are not meant to swim. Note they kick you off the beach at about 5:30pm. It is a nice beach, but no wildlife except a few marine iguanas. Beware of vicious biting horse flies that attack you if you try to sit in the shade at the back of the beach. I got 40 nasty bug bites in about 30 seconds before running back into the ocean to get them off. Painful.
We saved the long walk to the snorkel friendly bay by paying $30 for a water taxi (you can probably get it for $20). The water is very shallow, not clear and we saw hardly anything. It was busy despite the low number of visitors due to Covid. After 30 minutes we were bored but the boat would not leave for another hour, so we walked back to town.
My best advice if you want to visit the Galapagos by land is to fly into Baltra, have a taxi take you to Los Gemelos (20 mins) and the El Chato tortoise reserve (90 mins), then get off Santa Cruz as quickly as possible. Do not book any organized tours because they are a total rip off (5 times the price of renting a taxi and doing it yourself). Isabela is so much better. Snorkeling at Concha de Perla (free!) and Los Tuneles was awesome!

After hearing how great this beach was, we knew we had to make the trek out to it. It is a long 2.5km on a nicely constructed brick walkway shadowed by attractive cactus trees. The first beach is full of marine iguanas, many lazing in the shadows of the mangroves. It was too rough to swim on our day with red flags posted. The second beach was sheltered, but the water very shallow. There are no facilities at the beach - no food, toilets, or water. Buy a large bottle of water for $2 where you sign in - you won’t regret it. We stayed around an hour and headed back. Despite being overcast, I foolishly got sunburned. Was it worth it - I say no.

If you are looking for a beautiful beach to sit on and relax-then this is your beach! It's gorgeous!
If you are looking for a place to see and interact with animals, there are better choices. We walked to this beach in the morning (8:00 a.m.). It takes awhile because it's a good walk , but easy because it's on a paved pathway. There are lots of Lava Lizards and birds on the walk, as well as, marine iguanas and pelicans on the first beach you come to. As we walked to the swimming beach of Tortuga Bay, there were already many people on this beach when we arrived.
I snorkled a bit. There were only a couple of fish. Then I rented a kayak (which was $10 since I was a single) and paddled around the outside of the bay. I saw a heron and two turtles. Unfortunately, the turtles were skittish and I was only able to see their heads before they swam away. It was a nice enjoyable visit-but I think I was expecting more based on the previous reviews.

We had heard about this beautiful beach from other tourists and decided to go to this beach before taking the speedboat to San Critobal.
You can walk there in about 1.5 hours. In the heat with the sun directly above you, it is quite an effort.
Since we had limited time, we decided to take the taxi boat for about 20 minutes for 20 USD per person. You can buy tickets at a kiosk just in front of the pier in the town. The boat departs from the harbor (NOT from the pier). Your return ticket states what time the boat will pick you up again.
At 2:00 PM we had to report to the port for the speedboat to San Cristobal and before that we also wanted to do the turtle trail at the Darwin Research Center.
The trip to the beach was done in 20 minutes and we were dropped off at the rocks on the calm beach where you can swim.
Very limited facilities (kayak rental).
The beach itself is beautiful, but no more special than we had seen elsewhere and could be reached more easily.
In terms of snorkeling, we had absolutely zero visibility. You couldn't even see your own hands when you stretched your arms out under the water. Unfortunately no sharks, rays or turtles. The reason, we heard, was the light rain that morning, which had washed sediments from the land into the bay.
In terms of swimming it was difficult because the water was very shallow and the bottom contained a lot of slimy sludge.
All in all, we had not chosen the best day and it was a waste of time and money. Just believe that in better conditions it can be a great beach. But we still don't think it's worth the walk or taxi boat. There are better, nicer and easily accessible beaches on both San Cristobal and Isla Issabela. If you book excursions, you will definitely end up at much better snorkeling spots.
We thought this was a bit of a hyped "tourist trap".

If you have time to spend then this is the right beach for you. It is beautiful and if you are lucky you might find some amazing creatures too. It takes 20-25 mins from the pier. It is better to plan an early morning trip before the crowd comes in so that you can enjoy the quietness and the beauty around.

Bring your snorkeling gear to really enjoy this beautiful beach. In 2 hrs we saw sharks, fish, pelicans, blue footed boobies, iguanas, a heron and probably more that I can’t remember. Amazing experience! The hike to the beach is worth it, but don’t try to do it in flip flops, it’s a hilly and long walk of 2.5 kms. My 9 year old fell in love with Tortuga bay! Remember it’s part of the park and therefore closed at 6pm. A park ranger does a sweep before 5:30 to ensure everyone leaves before closing.

It is certainly the most easily accessible beach if you want to spend a few hours relaxing. It can be reached in 20 minutes by boat from Puerto Ayora, the cost of the ticket is about ten dollars, you can choose between the morning boat (9.15 when I went) or the afternoon one, returning at different times.
The beach is white, sheltered from the currents, excellent for relaxing and taking a quiet swim.
The snorkeling set is useless, the suspended sand does not allow you to see anything, the seabed is shallow up to the end of the bay, there is really nothing to see.
Surrounded by mangroves it also allows you to find shade.
There is no service (no toilets, no refreshment points).
More interesting, in my opinion, is the beach behind, just after the strip of mangroves behind you... an immense white beach lashed by ocean waves and currents (bathing here is impossible... .), where however you will find iguanas and sea turtles feeding in the pools of crystal clear water created by the sea.. Beautiful beach for a walk on the shoreline!
I recommend a visit if you have half a day left in Santa Cruz, if you don't have any left, don't worry, you won't miss much, but if you really have nothing else planned, go, take a 10 minute swim in Tortuga Bay and then go to the beach behind!

Really not that impressed given all the hype.
The ferry costs 40 dollars and they pack you in like sardines and will give you a life jacket if you ask for one.
Once on the island you can see lots of iguanas to the right of the main beach but that’s about it very disappointing

Absolutely stunning beach. The sand is fine and white, the water color is incredible and the iguanas were not scared and posing for our pics😃. The bay right after was great to swim and refresh but the water is a little mirky. Worth the 35 min walk from the registration point so 40 from downtown. Put good shoes on I went with my flipflops and my feet hurt after 😎. Also make sure to take plenty of water, I shared one with my daughter and it was barely enough in the hot sun of January.

We are going January. Can you tell me about Kayak boat rentals on Tortoga Bay? Are they right on the beach? If not how far away. Many thanks for your review. It was very informative.

Hi, Did not see any rental possibilities at Tortoga Beach. It is a protected beach and there are no sales people there.
Written December 13, 2024
How much time do you recommend spending there, to take photos of wildlife and snorkel? (We aren’t “lay on the beach” people). Planning to water taxi there in the afternoon and walk back when it closes…June 2024. A morning visit doesn’t fit our itinerary..Thank you 🌊
Written November 26, 2023
If you arrive by water taxi an hour to an hour & half will be enough time for photos.
Our local guide warned against getting a taxi off the beach due to currents / tides. There is a taxi company operating on the beach on the beach.

Gracias Lizett

Hello, my husband and I are traveling here next week and I was wondering, where does the boat you take back to? Like What is the drop off point. Thank you
Written February 11, 2018
hello, no need of a boat. We took a taxi to the beginning of the park, where the ticket office is and walked about 30`along a nice road to arrive at the beach. Once there, you walk along it till you reach a peninsula where you cross and arrive at other beach. If you want to walk more, you can follow, from Puerto Ayora, the Charles Bindorf street that ends at the ticket`s office. If you take a look at the map at this post, you will see the road. Enjoy!
