Had a call today (26th Feb 2020) from my mum in Cheltenham, UK. She had just received our post card, in perfect condition, posted in the barrel on Floreana when we were there on the 23rd May 2012, almost 8 years ago!!!. So it really does work so long as you're not any hurry for your mail!

None of our group was impressed with this stop--other than the beach. It is a "cute" concept, but not a great experience.
The beach is a good one for walking--very long and has some animal and bird activity on it.

You can post a letter here and future travelers will look at the address. If it is near them, they will hand deliver the message. It's an ancient custom. You can also see some ruins of the former settlement, but beware of the numerous wasps around the island.

Fun thing to do from the Galapagos. Send your loved ones a letter from the Galapagos. Write it and leave it in the post box. Someone comes along sees that they live near them and takes it home with them and hand delivers it.
NB If you take a letter please only take one if you can HAND deliver it, that is the whole point of the little post office. HAND delivery! Do not of a stamp on them and post it.

24 January 2018 we left postcards in the mail box on Floreana island Galapagos. The following week we sent postcards from Quito - 1000 miles closer to the UK than Galapagos and closer to international mail flights.
11 February 2018 we received one of the postcards from Floreana (postmarked Peterborough UK). Interestingly the postcard we mailed from Quito Ecuador ($3 postage) is still out there somewhere!
A wonderful tradition!

Absolutely loved a morning spent at Post Office Bay. Loved the quirkiness of leaving postcards for future visitors to find, take and hand deliver just as I found one local to me left by another traveller.
There's even a wee football pitch by the beach, the whole boatload had a kickabout!!!
Beautiful beach by the way, lovely to snorkel from. Wildlife abounds of curse, sealions, seals, iguanas, the lot!!!
Amazing game place.

You need too know some of the stories before visiting or this will look like to be just a barrel on a post containing post cards. Actually, that is exactly what it is.
The history of the place is interesting and the opportunity to take away a card or two for hand delivery is nifty. If you do take a card, please hand deliver it as you are supposed to. I had someone pick up my card to my brother, bring it to the US and then put it in the US Mail with a stamp they provided. That's not what this is about.
The opportunity to hand deliver a card from Galapagos to someone in your area can be a wonderful experience, opening up entirely new conversations.

We also left postcards in the post office hoping our families will get them at some point. We at least would love that.

Don't forget to bring your postcards when visiting! And it's such a treat to go through all of the postcards that have been left from all over the world. It just brought tears to my eyes to find a postcard from a town not far from us in Texas when we were smack dab in the middle of the Galapagos Islands. Just something really cool about that. :)

It was interesting to visit Post Office Bay to see the famous barrel where you look for postcards from people who live close to you so that you can hand deliver them back to those people. Our guide told us that we could mail them if necessary. The beach was pretty, and we took a walk, but it really wasn't worth more than an hour unless you chose to snorkel off the beach.

I read there is a guided walk to Post Office Bay that takes about 2.5 hours, does anyone know anything more about this?

A delightful wet landing. We did not walk to the bay but we spent several hours late one afternoon enjoying the beach & the wildlife while the crew played football. It is well worth dropping off postcards as all ours made it to the U.K. Enjoy
