About
Built in 1885 as a city theatre according to the design of the specialized Vienna Helmer and Fellner workshop, which designed similar buildings throughout the Austro-Hungary of the time. Matsch, Kauffungen and Fritsch, and the Klimt brothers, permanent associates of the workshop, were charged with equipping the theatre, contributing to the pronounced central European atmosphere of the town. The exterior is adorned by figurative compositions of Music and Drama by Venetian sculptor Benvenutti. The opening of the theatre was marked by a performance of Verdi's Aida.

A lovely, large building smack dab in the center of the Old Town of Rijeka. It's impressive, with a nice park to sit in and enjoy the surroundings. Looking forward to seeing the interior which is so raved about locally.

Try to get inside! That's where it's at! Yes, the outside is beautiful and worth a gander but if there's an event going on of any kind do what you can to go. It is so very worth it. I got lucky and found a door in the back that was open and an employee pointed out the box office across the street (on the right if you're facing the building). The was a dance recital starting in about an hour so for just over five USDollars I got to experience that magic and spend lots of time enjoying the luscious interior including the ceiling art done in part by Gustav Klimit who painted the famous work, the Kiss. This is really a must see if you can.

So, each time I visit Rijeka, i make sure I go and see ballet they have currently, but not only that. I'm not sure how know fact is that this building built under Austria's influence (during Vienna's most successful art period in late 1800's). Theater's building was inaugurated in 1885. was first building that had electrical lightning in Rijeka and that ceiling's main painting was painted by Gustav Klimt and his brother.

The theatre was opened in 1885, designed by Herman Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner, Austrian architects who are the authors of 53 theatre houses all over Europe. It is similar to the ten years younger theatre house in Zagreb, but slightly smaller. The first theatre in Rijeka was built in 1765, followed by a new house (Adamić Theatre) which was opened in 1805. After several fires in theatres around Europe, the house was demolished and the new building was erected in its neighborhood. In front of the theatre is the statue of Rijeka’s composer Ivan Zajc, located in a small but very nice park.

Situated within Kazalisni Park this building stands proud, it is a beatiful structure and has lots of history attatched to it. Has an unusual water feature infront of it and is near to the waterfront and the local market. Didnt go inside as it was closed to the public on the day we visited. Nice and peaceful surroundings and worth a photo.

I haven't seen the Theatre from inside but it is located close to Korzo, I mean, everything in Rijeka is close to each other. There is like a small square in front of it with benches to sit in. Some statues, flowers, you can take good pictures. I don't know but somehow I enjoyed sitting there and just relaxing with the view. Things you do when you travel alone. :-D

nice building but it need some alterations......the program is so-so, more suitable for some modern theater than for official theater, the last few general managers did so bad work especially oliver frljić who put in the program all his frustrations and he became typical web hater, but i dont understand mayor of rijeka ,mr vojko obersnel who degraded whole name of theater with wrong decisions and he made of this theater provintional small, nothing to see theater, program is bad, even the actors are very professional.,

Can you go inside or tour the theatre without being part of an official tour group or having tickets to a show?
