A surprise on our holiday visit. A short taxi ride from Opatija (around 7km, taxis are cheap in Croatia - the trip cost around £7). We went for 2 nights. On the Friday we saw a Slovenian band called Fake Orchestra, producing blues/jazz influenced versions of traditional Slovenian folk songs. On Saturday night we saw a Macedonian blues band called Crossroads Blues Band (not a particularly inventive name) with a fabulous blues harp player who both looked and sang like Lemmy. Headline was the British band, King King. Good, 'modern' blues with a lively frontman (in a kilt) who really had the crowd going. Fabulous performances, a real holiday bonus.

The old city of Kastav, situated on top of a hill, overlooks beautiful Kvarner! There are many little cafe bars and 4 tasty restaurants to visit: Loze, Vidikovac, Kukuriku and Pizzeria Rustica. Hiking trails in the woods, little shops, art gallery, cute houses, building ruins (remnance of an old city) and a church are other pleasant things to see and experience. Don't miss out on the wine festival during the fist Sunday in October! Summer concerts (e.g.Blues Festival) are a must see too in August. You won't be disappointed when visitig this little jewel!.

While there are certainly multiple beautiful hilltop views of Rijeka, Cres, and Krk, Kastav offers an amazing view with the added benefit of offering historic, cultural, and gastronomic delights.

Park near Kukuriku and head toward the church of Sveta Jelena. As you go up, notice the artsy poster boards sharing short stories about local lore.

Take in the view from Sveta Jelena, then head to the ruins of Saint Mary's church. From there, make your way back to the car, passing by the old town hall, which dates back to the 16th century.

End at Kukuriku and enjoy one of the best meals in the area as you overlook Rijeka and surroundings.

Kastav seems to host many music festivals during the summer. Check local calendar for listing of events. A blues festival is up next (notice date of this review).

Kastav is beautiful and the best part is that it is not very busy.

We visited the old town for the first time for supper and were so taken back that we returned another day and arrived earlier so that we could see more.

The old town is hilly and has lots of cobble stones so wear sensible shoes. There are plenty lanes to walk down and admire the old buildings which date back to medieval times.

The most majestic part is the view of the Opatjia Riviera which is equally lovely day or night. The views were also impressive from the old fortification.

There are a few nice restaurants - it's a lovely half day out.

We had a car and wanted to see a bit more of the countryside. It is a lovely quiet medieval town and we enjoyed walking around the narrow streets and soaking up the atmosphere.

We were staying in Rijeka and our only reason for visiting Kastav was to go to the a restaurant we had read about online. When we got there in the early evening we were charmed by the little village. Lovely place to walk around as the shadows got longer and the temperature started to cool off. Walked up to an old fortification that overlooks the village and out to the ocean. The path and the ruin itself were dotted with wildflowers. Besides the slow food restaurant we went to, there were other cafes and restaurants. I'm not sure I would visit here just to visit unless you just want to soak up a bit of old world charm.

Car-drivers need to get to Kastav before mid-morning. Car-parking close to the historic town square is limited. There are designated carparks further down the hill.
Kastav maybe be well known for the series of variable length walks through the adjoining forests, but for us the town was well worth visiting.
The town tourist agency has developed the interactive "Kušajmo Pricu" (Tasty Tales) game to enable visitors to explore the streets and buildings through the folk-lore of the town. The folk-lore, from planting 'gardens of sardines' to the child-hungry monster that prowls the streets at night, will appeal to kids and adults alike.
Other than the gourmet restaurant of the Hotel Kukuriku, there are NO 'casual' restaurants or caffes inside the walls of the old town. The main square has three to four caffe and one restaurant with vine-covered tables. Further down the hill on the east side is a short street with several restaurants.
We discovered a quirky variation of 'macchiato' in Kastav. The offer of cold milk actually means a cold (but not chilled) cup of coffee!
As with all hill-top locations, vistas on sunny days are stupendous. The 1km long bridge to Krk Island and almost the entire length of the 'riviera' coast of Opatija was visible the day we went.

City with a small, partially walled historic center and thousand year old soul. Views from many of it's ramparts, towers and forts over the Kvarner bay to the south, or Gorski Kotar mountains to the north. Great climate, usually a few degrees cooler than Rijeka during the summers. Clean, tidy and well organized, you can enjoy wandering it's tight streets and narrow passageways then suddenly enjoy the magnificent, panoramic views over the surroundings. Many restaurants and caffes in and around the town.
