About
The City Museum of Rijeka is a general cultural and historical museum institution. It engages in collecting, handling, and restoring precious material, but it also organizes research projects, sets up relevant exhibitions, and publishes detailed catalogs that explore the topics from the city’s recent history. The City Museum of Rijeka acts as a live memory place of the surroundings in which it is located. The Museum is an inspiring, professional, and esteemed flywheel of activities significant in the process of recognition, study, conservation, and promotion of the cultural and historical heritage of Rijeka. The museum operates in three locations - the permanent exhibition is presented in the renovated Sugar Palace, while the Rijeka Torpedo exhibition - the first in the world - is set up in the area of the railway depot in Žabica. The Cube is used for occasional exhibitions.

We walked 1.3 km utilizing the pedestrian zone to this museum. After paying 60 kn for 2 seniors, we self toured this former palace beginning with the elevator to the 2nd floor. Here we learned about the establishment of a company to refine sugar starting in 1752, becoming a dominant European supplier (model of the large factory complex in 1824). In the 1850’s it changed to a tobacco factory and in 1950 to an engine factory. The 1st floor dealt with the history of Rijeka industry; torpedo in 1875, curved wood chair in 1876, cutlery in the 1890’s and other consumer goods, the war years and finally the big shipyards after WW 11.
Interspersed among the 31 total rooms were ones devoted to the period with decorations and furniture, especially the large halls with paintings and stucco work. Great museum.

The museum has many interesting animals and insects, but unfortunately we couldn’t understand all of the writings on the wall as some were only in croatian.
We enjoyed the movie that was rolling, the animals were big and we were surprised when we saw them.
We were expecting it to be bigger, but everything else was beautiful.

This museum was a revelation, set in the old headquarters of a sugar company and known as the Sugar Palace, it charts the turbulent history of Rijeka. The displays have all been redesigned as part of the city’s 2020 European City of Culture status and are informative, engaging, interactive and beautiful to look at. All the information is in Croatian and English.
The building itself is splendid, elegant design with air conditioning, water coolers and nice toilets. A ‘quick look in’ turned into a visit of over two hours. If you are in the city and want to understand its history, then the Sugar Palace is a must.

The Rijeka City Museum (Croatian: Muzej grada Rijeke) is housed in the Sugar Palace, which used to be the seat of a sugar refinery. Admission costs 7.9 euros for adults or 10.6 euros as a combined ticket with the Torpedo Museum. Children up to 7 years are free. It is open daily except Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The museum was opened in 1994 and displays exhibits from the history and culture of the city.

This was a quite small and confusing place... In the first floor there were paintings etc. of (I suppose?) important people from Rijeka's history - but no story line explaining what these people had to do with anything. The second floor made even less sense: there were pretty photographs, but no explanation as to what the photographs were about. Third floor seemed to be closed and fourth floor looked like an antiques furniture shop, surrounded by what seemed like someones offices. I suppose I should have read up on Rijeka's history before going, perhaps then everything would have made more sense.

The Rijeka Museum is a must see – in addition to the splendor of the building ("The Sugar Palace"); the museum does a spectacular job of running through the history of Rijeka and surrounding area over two floors. Give yourself enough time (at least 2 hours) to read the many descriptions of this city’s fascinating history (having changed hands multiple times (Venetian/Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, Yugoslav, Croatian) in addition to having been a city-state. Some of the exhibits appear to be out of chronological order but regardless the political and industrial history of the city is well worth taking time to read about and better understand. The displays are extremely well-done (in Croatian and English).

Definitely worth a visit, really enjoyed the exhibitions that were on - Faces of Rijeka (or something similar to that) and the International Student Posters. It's fairly cheap to get in and you can get a student discount as well.
