About
THE MARITIME AND HISTORY MUSEUM OF THE CROATIAN LITTORAL has been one of the most important meeting-places of culture in the city of Rijeka for the last four decades. With its permanent display and many valuable exhibitions from its own holdings or of other Croatian museums it takes part in tracing the important events connected with the history and culture of Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and Croatia, and so it reveals small parts of the insufficiently known past. With its research into the complex materials (of archaeological, ethnographical, artistic, cultural-historical and maritime-historical characteristics), in a time span from prehistory to the Modern Age, with expert and scientific methods it processes, systemises and presents the role and development of the whole of the social organism in the region of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Croatian Littoral and the city of Rijeka and points out its specific and interactive relationship with other European centres over a thousand year period, with the aim of becoming a dynamic, open and educative institution. With its headquarters in the building of the former Governor’s Palace, a protected cultural monument, as exhibit number 1, the museum with an interdisciplinary approach offers the consideration–identification, familiarisation and understanding of the character of the people and places, memories and myths, uncovering the identity, which represents an unbreakable link of the past and present.

It´s one of those museums where the building is more remarkable than the exhibits. And still, there are some interesting things on display.
The staircase and the courtyard are the highlights. The rest is a peculiar mixture of antique furniture and paintings that make this museum look more like a palace.

The modern art exhibitiion and the Homeland War memorials look out of place. It´s an excellent choice for a rainy day.

Liked the fact that it was situated on 3 different floors.
Many exhibits, one can find out in a few words about the history of Rijeka.
If you got tired of reading there was a movie playing about the founding and founders of the city.
There big ships and compasses exposed.
Very nice, would recommend and on top of that it’s budget friendly.

Beautiful old building with some interesting exhibits but overall the museum could use some improvement. The newer exhibits were pretty good but the older ones could use a little better signage. The electronic displays were not very user friendly. It was hard to figure out how to use them. In the end we just gave up trying. If they want the museum to be more attractive to tourists, they should consider making sure every exhibit sign is in English as well as Croation.

Looked for some maritime themes, but only 1-2 rooms are about it. The rest 18 rooms are about some croatian history. Not too bad but expected a little more from the name. Luckily catched the “Croatian Museums Day” so the entrance was free.

Thanks to TanjaD for her review, it helped a lot to find the best thing in Rijeka. Nowadays interactive games are so popular, anyway, the collection of the museum is more than playing some moments of history. It is planned according to a complex methodology. You might discover different layers of life from the past, not only objects found later, but connections among the objects and relations among the cultures. The team is promising to extend the interactive part in the nearest future, might be next year.

From the very friendly receptionist to the interesting (and varied!) exhibitions and the beautiful architecture this museum is well worth a visit! It displays one of only 5 remaining life jackets from the Titanic, and the only one on display in Europe. The official rooms on the first floor are beautifully decorated, and whilst most texts are in Croatian there are some that have been translated into German and/or English. It was lovely to stroll through the rooms and gain some insights into Rijeka's history.

This museum is in the Governor's Palace and is so much more than a maritime museum. Elaborate ceilings and chandeliers in the rooms, lots of finely crafted furniture. Paintings from many different centuries. Uniforms, swords, sabers, guns and rifles on display too. Be sure to read the info in each room. Flip the chart over for English. Walk out onto the upper deck and see the magnificent sea view. Next floor is dedicated to the Maritime theme complete with the sound of crashing waves and creaking ships. Nice history of boat building in Rijeka too. Great collection of antique coins, vessels and navigational tools.
Highly recommed a visit here and the price is afforable too.

I loved this Museum.
The exposition about Homeland war made me feel sick of what people can do to each other and I finally understood what happened.
I loved the chamber with all kind of weapons and appreciated writing my name in Glagolitic (very nice touch!).
And the exposition about seafaring completed very nicely spent afternoon.
All the expositions were of very good quality and I didn´t believe how cheap it was. But the best part of the Museum is the stuff that helped us to find our lost friends on security cameras.
Just awesome!

They have a new excellent interactive permanent exhibition. You can write your name in glagolitic alphabet, you can uncover a skeleton or wear a beautiful dress all thanks to their interactive gadgets. I loved it!

The museum had a variety of exhibits, including a musical instrument exhibit, a weapons exhibit, the maritime exhibit, a special exhibit about Robert Conrad and an exhibit on the Croatian war. There was English explanations for most pieces. It also has 1 of 5 remaining life jackets from the Titanic in the world.
