This was a very long walk (25+ km each way from Minca). It wasn't particularly difficult, just long. The entire trip is a moderate uphill on varying road conditions (dirt, rock, paved, etc). Once you get through "the y" the walk becomes much more scenic and shaded. Lots of plants and birds to look at. I left Minca at 7am and got there at 1:30ish. I didn't stop too much though. Bring enough water for the trip up and the return. I would suggest leaving early in the morning to avoid the hot sun for the first 1/2 of the hike.
Be prepared to camp at the top as accommodation is not guaranteed...Moncho's place is the only accommodation running 50.000 cop to sleep there and another 20.000 cop if you want to eat. You can also bring your own food and ask him to prepare it (I don't know what the cost for this is). He can accommodate about (4?) people. I arrived around 1:30 pm and he had space but I brought a hammock with me and paid 15.000 cop to camp in his yard. By 4:30pm he did not have any more space...I'm not sure what those people did instead.
It gets pretty cold at night 35-40 degrees F so be prepared. I only had pants, jacket, hat, gloves, and sleeping bag liner. I would've been pretty cold in the hammock if another traveler didn't let me use his sleeping bag (he said he didn't need it since Moncho had blankets)
The view at the top is really weather dependent. When I went, there were clouds in the afternoon so you couldn't see anything at the top and haze in the morning so you couldn't see into the valley for the sunrise. There is a nice rock to look at the sunrise,from (about half way between Moncho's and the top of the mountain) It is across from a lookout post that you don't have access to--it starts with an "M" but I forget the name.
Regardless, I enjoyed myself and met some other nice travelers. I would recommend if you enjoy physical activity. There is also an option to take a moto up either all the way or partially...many people did this but I am crazy and walked the whole way.

I hired a bicycle from Minca bikes and decided to cycle up to Cerro Kennedy. When I say up, well it’s relentlessly up! I think I pushed my bike more the cycled it up! I’m reasonably fit and it took me 7 hours from Minca to get to the hit(do do muncho) granted I took it easy and stopped to take photos have a drink etc.
The path is clear though and if you look at a map you won’t get lost. It’s basically up up up, if there is choice of road then it’s the one that’s going up! I think there the road only branched once by a restaurant with a fantastic viewpoint, anyway it’s the road the the left that you want to take.
Once you see the red pylons, which I think are used for tv broadcasting then you are nearly there. Donde muncho is what the little hut is called where you can sleep. The guy looking after this place works/lives by the second red tower, go find him if he hasn’t already seen you and is out to greet you. The hut is very very basic, the room had four beds, with bedding which I’m sure probably doesn’t get washed after every guest. So bring a sleeping bag if that freaks you out. Bring warm clothes too to sleep in as you pretty high up here and it gets chilly. The guy looking after the place will also cook food for you for a small fee. But bring some food with you to get you by Incase he doesn’t offer..
To get to the end point it’s another approx 3km on from the hut. This is really tough going I think maybe due to altitude too but once there the views are totally worth it. I did sunset at the end point and was completely above the clouds, it was magical. For sunrise I also came back here but in hindsight for sunrise I recommend you just go about 500m from the hut to the point when you just coming down a little hill, there is a stone bench on the right, sit and enjoy the view from here. Or carry on a little till you see an observation tower (this is u fortunately fenced off) about 50metres on from this tower the road slightly bends to the left, look out for a path on the left into the grass and up this little hill, the view from there is spectacular too. My reasoning for the different points, for sunset there was loads of cloud cover, by going to the end point this enabled you to be higher up and above the clouds. In the morning there was not much cloud cover and the view over the valley and to the snow capped peaks I think is better from the points described above.
The descent was shattering due to the rocky nature of the road. But all in all this little adventure has been one of the highlights of my trip. If you not up for the cycle then pay for a motor taxi up in the afternoon, sleep there (if you can happy to rough it a bit), enjoy the sunrise then walk down. It truly was magical.
