After checking out the statues in Plaza Botero, we decided to pay a visit the oldest Roman Catholic church in Medellin, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in Parque Berrio.
Right in front of the church is a statue of General Pedro Justo Berrío standing on top of a pedestal of Carrara Marble, made in Rome by Italian artist Giovanni Anderlinin.
There has been a church here since 1649, the current Neoclassical building was completed in 1776 and has been renovated many times since. Passing through the large black wooden doors the churches lovely tiled checkered floor leads up to the gold and silver painted main altar, which is very beautiful. The dark wooded ceiling of the main aisle, stands out against the church’s stark white walls, where an assortment of holy figures and paints are hanging.
We left the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria by an interesting large red and cream coloured side entrance, which took us into a small alleyway alongside the basilica and street market.
TIP: Inside the church of Our Lady of Candelaria is quite and cool, so please show some respect for those who are praying when taking photos.

Rigtn the heart of Plaza Berrio, this is the oldest Catholic Church in Medellin and was one of the first things we saw when we arrived in the downtown for a walking tour.
Beautiful white facade, it's a realky impressive structure and well worth a photo stop.

Excellent trip! It was the second time I was in Colombia, but the first time in Medéllin. Bogotá very beautiful, clean with beautiful parks. Cartagena with its walled city is a must! Medéllin was my main interest to get to know the popular transport system that is famous in the world and inspiring for several cities. I recommend the Dorado Experience agency in Medéllin, with Portuguese-speaking guides and excellent service.
