Distinctive, imposing building at Plaza Botero. The intricate black and white façade is almost dizzying. When being built, it caused such public criticism that the architect walked off the project and the city finished it in a different style. On this day it wasn’t open, but I understand that inside there’s a beautiful courtyard with fountains, a garden and artwork. Walk up to the top to see the excellent views of Plaza Botero and all those pudgy statues.

Designed and built between 1925-1937, in the Gothic Revival style, by Belgian architect Agustín Goovaerts. The frame of the dome is an architectural masterpiece, constructed with steel beams imported from Belgium in 1928 and assembled like the sky scrapers of New York, by heating the nuts and bolts until red hot, which on cooling giving strength to the structure without welding. There is a center courtyard and rooftop observation area but most outstanding is the checkerboard pattern on the outside of the building, these are not two different colored tiles, but paint.
Originally the building was the Government of Antioquia administration headquarters, known locally as the "Calibío Palace". But with the completion of the La Alpujarra Administrative Center, (which is also worth a visit) the Government moved to this location, and in 1987 the building was renamed after General Rafael Uribe.
The four floors of the building are now home to concerts, a café, library, art gallery, and the “Rafael Uribe” Museum room. As we were walking with a group we did not go inside, but it is very convenient for the Berrío Park Metro station, Botero Plaza, Berrío Park, Museum of Antioquia.
TIP: Depending on the sunlight, the white stones sometimes have a greenish hue.

It is a free Cultural Center in a lovely old building. The art exhibited when I was there was beautiful and varied.
I volunteer at the Chicago Cultural Center which is also free and has exhibits and cultural events like this center and I really enjoyed my visit.

Good rooftop views of Plaza Botero and the cityscape of Medellin from the top of this civic building. It's free to go up but you must show your passport.
The view is good and it's worth going up if you're passing but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.
The building itself is a very striking one, as I said, if you're in the area it's worth a stop.

Very interesting building you can visit for free. The exhibitions are nothing special, but the architecture is very interesting and the view from the top terrace on Plaza Botero is great. Note that the building has been designed by a Belgian architect and that it has not been completed. Google it

This Palace is simply incredible. Firstly the exteriors boasts a variegated design in which the colours alternate between grey and beige. The Palace is also huge and stands over Plaza Botero with such grandeur. The interior is equally impressive and showcases a whole range of local art and gives the place a nice cultural touch.

The building was half built by a Belgian who left in the middle of the project. Apparently they never finished it, built a wall, and called it a day. It’s a beautiful building and has all the statues surrounding it.

The building was nice but the surrounding area is congested, dirty and filled with vendors, homeless people and questionable people.

This place is for the art, architecture or history buff who speaks and reads Spanish well, since the signs and what the guides can tell you all in that language. That being said, it is a really beautiful and interesting place, whose eclectic style goes from Neogothic to Art Nouveau. The Colombian patriot whose life is depicted here, Rafael Uribe Uribe, was a sort of 19-20th century Liberal "Renaissance Man", responsible for many of the ideas that the contemporary political structure now embodies. There is also a whole section devoted to the Belgian architect Agustin Goovaerts, in charge of buidling the Palacio, which will be of interest to the art student/lover. If you are none of the above, at least you will want to take a photo, it is right on the square where all the Botero statues are located. Interesting juxtaposition of a major coropration's HQ, the "Needle Building" and the Metro, right behind the Palacio - the Old and the New Bogota rubbing elbows.

This area is very busy and crowded visitors beware…but it’s still a must see spot in the city. The huge statues are fun to see and make for some great photo opportunities.
