Lovely Area of Government Buildings

We had a walking tour of the city and ooe of the areas we visited was this huge plaza outside the Antioquia government buildings and town hall. The buildings are striking and there is an incredible curved sculpture that dominates the area.
We really enjoyed it and I'd recommend it without hesitation.

great sculpture - El Monumento a La Raza (Monument to Race)

My first weekend in Medellin, I chose to partake in a city tour hosted by Real City Tours. After a short introduction to the tour and background information about our guide, our first stop was La Alpujarra Administrative & Business District with huge concrete buildings that houses the Medellin and Antioquia government offices. Before we were even close to the center, the first thing I noticed was this amazing tall sculpture made out of concrete called El Monumento a La Raza (Monument to Race). [This is the lower portion of the sculpture.] We were told that the sculpture was created by Rodrigo Arenas Betancur, who was born in the nearby town of Fredonia and known as one of the most famous and significant sculptors in Latin America. Standing 120 feet high, the sculpture tells the story of the people of Antioquia. I was in absolute awe of the size and intricate details!

Lots of large ugly concrete buildings.

The Centro Administrative La Alpujarra, is the government center of the city, we took a free walking tour (in English) to get the whole story on the center of town. La Alpujarra Administrative & Business District with its huge odd shape concrete buildings some even looking like bamboo, that houses the City Hall, Palace of Justice, and the Seat of the Governor of Antioquia.
Before we were even close, we could see in the center of this square the 120 feet high concrete El Monument a La Raza (Homage to Our Heritage), created by local artist Rodrigo Arenas Betancur. It tells the history of the people of Antioquia and his ashes are actually entombed in one of the pillars. The next statue the Homenaje a los Doctores Guillermo Gaviria y Gilberto Echeverri by Salvador Arango, pays tribute to former Antioquia Governor Guillermo Gaviria and peace commissioner Gilberto Echeverry, both of whom were kidnapped and killed during the reign of Pablo Escobar.
There are a number of smaller statues scattered around the Plaza, made by Olga Inés Arango., like the lottery ticket salesman, and a bronze statue of a shoe-shine man.

TIP: Amongst all the concrete there are some interesting things to see but recommend you take a free walking tour.

Ugly and unsafe

The area is very ugly and feels very unsafe. Also, the streets are filthy and full of garbage. I do not recommend.

How do you visit?

I read lots of reviews of this interesting cluster of modern architecture, but when I was here in June 2017, there was no way to visit any building as the whole area was cordoned off by barriers, with police guarding the only breaks in the barrier wall. I got some photos of the statues and buildings you can see from the street, but if this is always the situation, there's no point in coming here.

Interesting architecture plus meaningful monumental art

By no means the most beautiful of structures in Medellin, this complex is nevertheless of great importance to the city, and the huge monument in front of it tells a fascinating story.

A lovely administrative centre

With El Monumento a La Raza, which has the history depicted in its structure, in the square, this administrative centre is quite attractive. It took me a while to find it. You have to ask around.
It is a must see attraction, although not many visitors were there.

This is a must, outstanding place, close to historical places in Medellin, Parque de las Luces, Teleantioquia, Guayaqui, Cisneros, Biblioteca Publica, El Metro, El Tranvía, etc.

Worth a peak!!!

This is the government center of the city. It has some interesting arquitecture and the building around it are quite interesting. I recommend coming here on a walking tour by Real City Tours (free and in English) to get the whole story on the center of town.

Interesting modern architecture.

Without the explanations fro a guide it is not easy to explore this area.This area has open urban plan, important administrative and government buildings, eye pleasing urban planning. A few eye catching monuments. It helps to know Colombian history.
