From Medellin I hired a taxi to take me to Guatpe. It is normally about a two hour ride, but because this was on Sunday, there was a lot of traffic and it took almost 3 hours. The driver was very accommodating and for a small hourly fee waited in Guatape while I toured around.
I took a boat tour, and the scenery is amazing. The lagoon is truly a beautiful place, dotted with lovely homes, and few remnants of Pablo Escorbar.
The hour long excursion is well worth it.

About 90 minutes to 2 hours outside Medellin, these lakes are simply gorgeous. They are best seen frommon top of El Penol, the huge granite monolith just outside Guatape. They take the breath away.

We did this on a tour. The guides were ok. The rock is great and the views spectacular. The tour we were on gave us an hour to walk around the town of Guatape and we also stopped at another town. I would recommend finding a tour that includes a boat trip on the lake ... even 2 hour would be really nice.

My partner and I recently did guatape and La powers as a day trip from Medellin.
So basically what’s happened here is that around 3 months ago there was a landslide on the main road between marinilla and guatape. In traditional Colombian style they’ve ripped up the entire road and are trying to fix it. But this means the road is closed in both directions.
To get around the road block buses are either doing a giant detour through santuario and it’s adjacent muddy single lane mountain roads or are getting people to jump out, walk through the road block and get in a bus on the other side.
The wash up of all this is that it causes significant delays.
When we did it on the 6/12/2022 we left our hostel at 0800 and didn’t get to La piedra until 1315, with the bus trip taking 4 hours. Similar story back. In the end we lost so much time we were only able to hike La piedra and not continue onto guatape. We spent 9 hours travelling (including transfers to and from the bus station and waiting times for often late buses) and only 2 hours at the site itself.
I think until they fix the road don’t bother trying to attempt this independently. It might be better as a tour given that they sort out logistics and you don’t waste your time waiting on buses but be ready to spend a lot of time on the road.

They say El Penol of Gautape has the maximum footfalls each year, and there are good reason for that. It is a unique rock formation protruding out of nowhere, simply spectacular. Flora and Fauna nearby is worth watching and the place is ideal for hikers. Nearby town of Gautape n El penon is also a quaint charming place for spending a day or two. Houses and shops are noticeable for their bright soothing to eye colors and illuminated paintings, decor and bedecked with unique designs all over.

We truly loved every minute of our day trip to Guatape! The views from the top of the Giant rock are just breathtaking! Now, I highly recommend at least spending one night there, as our drive there took almost 3 hours there, and 3 hours back. The travel companies and locals might tell you 1 to 1h30, but that's impossible! There's only one road in, and one road out. Its almost impossible to pass, as the road is very winding, and up and down. We got held behind a large truck going around 20 miles and hour, which cost us a lot.
Now, once we reached Guatape, it was all worth it. The entrance to the Rock is roughly $5.50 (20,000COP), and they only accept cash. The hike takes roughly 20 minutes if you take your time, as the steps are steep and water runs through them. Once up there though, you quickly forget all about the ride and the hike, as the views are absolutely breathtaking!

Guatape is a must if you visit Medellin. For every possible reason:
Sightseeing, exercising, enjoying local foods and beverages, taking a tour of the lake, jetskiies, water skiing, paddle boarding.. you mention it. Climbin the Penol rock... What not

This is a beautiful area. Take a boat ride on the man-made lake and learn some history of the area. Definitely climb the rock. It's only $7 (usd) and you go at your own pace. the view from the top is breaktaking. There are several good restaurants there too. It will be very crowded! The town of Guatape is really quaint and makes for a lovely walk. There isn't much else to do unless you are a shopper or want to get a bite to eat.

Guatape, unlike the rock, was very much worth the two hour drive from Medellin. I absolutely could not get enough of the gorgeous views of the lake. The water and natural formations are breathtaking. As part of our tour, we got to go out on a boat around Guatape and it was a pretty fun experience. I think if you're visiting Medellin you have to come out and see how beautiful this place is.

This site can be seen from the Penal near Guatape which is about the best thing that I can say about it. There is nothing natural or exceptional about it and I have no interest in going back. There are dozens of ecological sites and national parks that are worth visiting. This is not one of them.

Gracias
