While taking a walking tour around the city center of Medellin, we passed under the San Antonio Metro subway station, and spoted the 50yr old Salon Malaga bar / billiards hall, come dance school. Having read so much about this place we went inside to check it out, have a beer and an Andean brandy. The cabinets alongside the walls were lined with old radios, gramophones and jukebox’s, there were also lots and lots of black-and-white photographs of long-dead singers on the walls, really nice atmosphere and relatively inexpensive drinks.
The waiter informed us that downstairs was a dancehall, where people came to watch tango dancing and singers, and also to dancing and get dance lessons.

TIP: On the weekend it gets very full, so it’s best to make a reservation.

Beautiful old cafe in the middle of Medellin. Full of older people, clearly regulars. Eclectic mix of photographs and old juke boxes. My kind of place

This cafe / restaurant was recommended to me by a tour guide, and I'm glad he did! I just went in for a beer, but it has a charming old school ambiance. It was full of locals when I went in the early afternoon. You can just picture Gabriel Garcia Marquez meeting his journalist friends here for a cafe and convo.

Our guide took us here for coffee and I absolutely loved it for its atmosphere and great strong black coffee. Don’t expect any lattes here!

Since 1957 that salon exists in Medellin. It is so pleasant to sit there spent an afternoon with friends drinking a nice Colombian beer (Colombiana, Clara, Roja or Negra), if you like Tango music visit this salon, Fridays nice dancing, the salon has lots of history.

We went here based on a recommendation from our walking tour host. It is advertised as a "bar" that hasn't changed in years and is a historical/patrimonial spot to enjoy a refreshment amidst decades old pictures and music (tango) memorabilia. Downstairs is a salon/dancehall that hosts regular shows. A gentleman near the door sells music CDs and I picked up a Carlos Gardel tango hits disc for 10,000 COP. A fun diversion after a morning of exploration in centro Medellin. Go and soak up the ambience over a nice, cold aguila cerveza or mixed drink. Also, would love to go back and enjoy an evening show sometime.

It's a nice bar full of pictures and tango music. They have some live music too but unfortunately we didn't visit there when the live music is on.
If you like tango music this is a nice place to go - not sure if they have milonga - trying to ask but my Spanish isn't good enough 😂

Salon Malaga is a traditional place in Medellin, with more of 50 years old. It is in down town, is like Tortoni coffee in Buenos Aires. This place has differents activities like tango dance, tropical music, You could drink coffee and liquors, eat argentinian empanadas, and listen good music. Every wall is decorated with old pictures. Price about drinks is cheap. You get the place in metro, leave in San Antonio Station. If You are tourist, I recommended visit place untill 8 or 9 p.m.

Salon Malaga is a place that when you go into, you feel that too much happened there. The atmosphere is very great, nice old music, lots of pictures of famous old singers and musicians. Nice place to take some coffee/beer near the center and immerse yourself in a place with history.

If you are going for tango by all means go for the experience. I wouldn't bother seeking it out as a place to just drink a beer or have a coffee in the afternoon. The service was efficient if not particularly friendly. Sitting outside at El Cafe del Museo de Antioquia on Plaza Botero is far more entertaining and the beer is a lot colder.
