Okay

Good place for history buffs, I guess. But not much to see. Just a plaza, a statue and some buildings.

Large plaza full of history
Feb 2019
This is the area of the old customs house and where Don Pedro de Heredia, founder of Cartagena, had once lived. This open plaza is one of the largest spaces in the Old City. It is bordered by imposing city walls made of coral and rock. In the center of this square sits a statue of Christopher Columbus and, quite inappropriately, next to Columbus is a statue of an indigenous woman. Columbus was not a friend to the people he conquered in the name of Spain.

This is also part of the historic Slave Route, part of a Unesco project called “The Route of the Slave: Resistance, Freedom and Heritage” which highlights areas of entrance and slave trading in Cartagena such as the Plaza de Los Coches (Cars Plaza), Plaza de la Aduana (Custom’s Square), and San Pedro Plaza putting a different light on these and other areas in Cartagena.

Lot of vendors

Another beautiful building representing the Spanish influence in the area. We found several vendors offering local hand made crafts and trinkets.

At the center of it all
Sep 2018 • Couples
There really isn't much to see at the Alcaldia other than a big plaze that in the day time is HOT in the direct sun but at night traqnsforms into one of the meeting places in la ciudad muralla. it is also an indispensable landmark that allows those new to the walled city to navigate with at least some degree of confidence. Yes ,this is actually the mayor's office and dates from the early 18th century. The office provides a wonderful example of Spanish colonial architecture as well as the perfect meeting place. Learn how to pronounce "la alcaldia [al-cal-dee-uh] and when lost, simply find your way back to the place. During the day, the mayor's staff is hard at work yet many still find time to point out places interest or recommend lunch spots. At night, street artists and vendors flood the plaza, giving it an entirely different vibe. The Alcaldia is the place to start any visit to the walled city of Cartagena and the best landmark for finding one's way around the city.

It's a really pretty square
Jun 2018 • Solo
It's one of a couple of squares that you'll encounter during our walk. Imagine going back in time 300 years ago and the slaves that were brought in and you get a very different sense of this area than what you see now.

Clubs and ladies of the night
Sep 2017 • Friends
Amazing clubs at night here, there is one called club VIP which has an awesome level two where you can look over the courtyard and watch the ladies negotiate "business" which is quite entertaining. Level 3 has one of the coolest night clubs I have been to, fairly small but live DJs and great music. Very local as well, we were 2 of maybe only 6 gringos there.
