Theatre entrance is in the back behind the stage. Fee for entrance and guided tour (English) was $15000 COP.
Not always open as many activities including weddings and receptions. We got in at 9:00 AM when it opens. They have to turn on the lights so consider it a privilege to have the only guide that can show you this beauty.
This theatre is so beautiful with cedar dividers for the seating sections. The floors are made from a special wood to enhance in acoustics.

"A luscious refurbishment by architect Alberto Samudio in 1988 restored the city's principal cultural venue to its former glory and Adolfo Mejia's theatre of dreams still hosts the city's most glittering events.
Through the course of the year classical music concerts, film premiers, literary readings and theatre troupes all compete to impress the city's culture buffs against a marvellous backdrop.
The theatre's eclectic but beautiful design ushers affluent spectators towards their seats via an icy cold, marble staircase shipped in from Italy. On the ceiling a glorious fresco painted by Cartagena's most renowned artist, Enrique Grau, depicts the dance of the nine muses of the arts.
Grau's magical surrealist stage curtain and the ornate, gold-plated fittings and towering figure of the India Catalina the charming translator for the city's founder Pedro Heredia provide the final golden touch to an already spectacular spectacle."

Who knew Cartagena had an opera house? And such a classically beautiful one?
My wife and I were wandering around Cartagena's Old Town when we came upon a crowd outside a theater. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte was about to begin. Bemoaning that we had no time to go back to our hotel to change into more appropriate (opera) dress, we were handed two free tickets by a passing stranger.
Gilt and dark wood, the theater is gorgeous. No one cared that we were in shorts and tennis shoes. And, you can't beat Mozart!

We attended a concert and an opera here during the Cartagena Music Festival. The theater is gorgeous inside, with ornate balconies and a wonderful ceiling mural. The sound quality was excellent.

The theater has interesting history and its well worth the visit.
We visited in October, 2016 and the admission with guide was 11,000 Colombian. The guide was in Spanish but she speaks some English. Finding the entrance can be little tricky as it isn't at the front of the theater. Just go around the building to the back where you will find small office. You will also get the back stage tour entering the theater from the stage as an actor rater than from the front as spectator. You can climb all the way to the top balconies as well. Their performing season is very short January - March but they offer tours all year long.

We attended a performance of Folkloric Dances by the Calenda Folcorico Group at this historic theatre during a tour from our cruise ship. The performance was energetic, colourful and highly entertaining. I was amazed at the performer's ability to constantly retain a smile! The theatre was also highly decorated and this section of our tour was the most memorable.

The place was remodeled recently but paints, rooms and some furnitures are the originals. It was designed and builders by Italian artist. The tour guide was extraordinary by a dancer of the theater. Keep in mind at least 2.5 hrs for the tour. The tour admission in Aug/2019 was $10k

Such a gem of a theater! So inspiring to learn that the government was willing to invest in its restoration! We took a guided tour with one of the theater’s own tour guide. She was proficient in Spanish and English, and pointed out wonderful details such as the ornamentations, and the ‘widows loge’.

They currently mostly rent out the place as a venue for third parties cultural and social events. The theater itself apparently does not have its own full-time production staff, but they do have a short opera ‘season’ in the month of January, featuring two evenings with singers contracted out of Italy.

I guess one would need to peruse the Cartagena cultural websites a couple of months before to learn the specifics. I am sure that a attending a performance there would be pure joy!

Finally got my opportunity to seat in the loge seats that surround the theater on several levels. Main floor seating is also just fine. The concert featuring Toto La Momposina with her musicians clearly influence my liking this beautifully restored place. The acoustics were fine so I would recommend it for any concert.

I had the extreme pleasure of presenting on the magnificent stage for a conference. It’s a grand old theater and they did a wonderful job keeping its feel, while updating to modern theater needs of technology.

We stumbled upon the Theatre one morning while exploring the Old City. Thankfully I remembered that we had to go to the back doors to get in. Thank you Tripadvisor! Even then finding the door is iffy since there is no sign. We walked in the first door we came too and it was the right one. The theatre is magnificent. The guide told beautiful stories and truly loved the building. If you can find the building and the time, take a tour. It is a special place.
