We went to playa Blanca on a day trip with Mamallena tours, we left at 12pm from Mamallena hostel and it took around 1 hour to get to the beach. When we got there we got on a short boat ride to a more secluded part of the beach, we stayed at the Ocean Blu area on the beach where we got drinks & lunch, swam in the sea and sunbathed - do be warned the sea around this area is very rocky so take care as I cut my feet and knees on the rocks! The tour returned to the hostel at 8:30. We had a wonderful day and really enjoyed having a base to come and go from.

The only problem I had with the whole day was we were told about the “Plankton tour” from 6:30-7:30 and given the option to do it for 30,000 pesos, I would NOT recommend. You get a boat to a “Laguna” where you get the chance to swim in the glowing plankton - at the beginning there was 10/12 people going on the tour, next thing our boat picked up at least the same number again, it was jam packed with people it was very uncomfortable and honestly felt unsafe the entire time, there were no lights so basically people were swimming in the pitch dark. The plankton was underwhelming.

I would highly recommend the Mamallena tour to Playa Blanca but skip the plankton & have another beer while you wait for the boat!!

This was an amazing experience. The ship is beautiful and Rudi and Yamiela were beyond fantastic.

We sailed the sunset along the coast of Isla Mujeres and got to enjoy the views, the homemade meals and the drinks provided by the crew.

I would highly recommend to anyone looking to charter a private ship and avoid the crowds of Isla Mujeres!

Firstly, booking through Mamallena was easy and informative. Upon email request, I was sent an extensive list of boats making the trip from Panama to Cartagena, Colombia along with available dates for each boat which seemed to be kept updated. Exceptional email communication continued after I chose the Wildcard. Had the option of an organised shuttle to the departure point but opted to get to Puerto Lindo by bus (cost me just $6ish in total, well worth the experience).

Onto the Wildcard. Firstly, the new Kiwi captain Richard was excellent. Happened to bump into him in Sabanitas and we managed to catch the right 'Diablo Rojos' to the departure point. In terms of sailing, he was clearly very capable and experienced and had worked the wildcard 4 years prior so in some ways he was getting used to it again but you really couldn't tell! He had some great stories to tell and felt completely safe in the rougher seas for the time of the year. The previous full-time captain, Charlie, was also at hand to make sure things ran smoothly during the transition period. The rest of the crew were also exceptionally capable and great people to get to know.

The food was simply extraordinary. How our cook managed to uphold such high levels of quality throughout is beyond me considering the sea conditions. Don't think i ever saw a plate that wasn't cleared passed back down to the kitchen! The 4 meals a day were perfectly balanced to keep you feeling full and nourished.

As for the San Blas Islands, they were literally paradise. Yes, most islands did have a side where rubbish from the water was washed up but that is the consequence of rubbish being dumped into the sea. We were always anchored off of the sides where there was little to no rubbish. Our boat had specialist knowledge on the best islands to visit and the Kunas were always welcoming to the wildcard and helped set up special activities (the huge bonfire was lovely at night.

If you want to visit San Blas, do it with the Wildcard! Will never forget the experience.

P.S bring seasickness tablets, don't say I didn't warn you ;)

Attention!

This trip might end as a big RIPOFF for you, so if you want to avoid it, DO NOT buy anything through the tour guide who introduces himself under the name Gabriel and says he’s from Venezuela. He will tell you that he’s there for you throughout the whole trip to make sure that you won’t get overcharged or ripped off. At the beginning of the trip, he will tell you to avoid vendors at the beach because they want to charge you for “the air that you breathe.”

We trusted him and took his advice to stay with him and eat lunch where he took us.

We got the following bill:
2x Coconuts - 60,000 pesos
Vegetarian pasta - 40,000 pesos
Fish - 85,000 pesos
Service - 35,000 pesos
Total Bill - 220,000 pesos (the equivalent of $85 USD)

Also the food was absolutely terrible. And even more, we were not drinking but the group of people next to us that were also with the same group ordered mojitos. They charged 25,000 pesos for mojitos but 30,000 pesos for a coconut. How is it possible that a coconut costs more than alcohol when they actually grow here?!? Also, typical service charge in Colombia is 10% of the bill. They charged us 20%.

We didn’t have enough cash to pay for this ridiculously overpriced bill, so they said we could pay with a credit card. But, they will charge you 15% for paying with a credit card. Oh, but Gabriel spoke to them and managed to get us a “discount” so that we were only charged 10% extra for paying via credit card at the end. That was really a generous RIPOFF.

Honestly, you would be better off paying for a whole tour which already includes the food and travel and you would get it cheaper than we did.

My point is not to hurt the hostel (thats why I’m giving them 3*), but to bring attention to what the guide does with their guests. And at the end, I believe the hostel should know it too.

My advice is to take the shuttle bus to and from the beach but do NOT interact with the “guide” or eat or drink where he advices. He puts on a big show to make you believe that he alone is trustworthy and he is there to protect you, but in the end, he’s the one screwing you over much more than any of the other vendors trying to make an honest living selling on that beach.

I really do apologise for that, and it absolutely should not have happened. Our idea was always to operate as a shuttle and our clients were free to go where ever they wanted in Playa Blanca. We decided to have a "guide" to try and have a better service, it obviously didnt turn out that way. As soon as I found out about this, he was terminated with rather strong words, and next time I see him in the street we will be having more rather strong words as well. Again, I apologise and this is not how we usually work, our reputation is important to us and we dont want this to happen.

If your looking for a one of a kind adventure on the largest sailboat to San Blas this is the boat. This beautifully maintained boat at 75 feet has lots of room for everyone! The crew: Captian James, Greg, Wilson and Kate were phenomena! From worrying about our safety to ensuring we had fun everywhere we went the trip was perfect! Best of all the food was fabulous as well! I loved the sunrises, the dolphins, beach volleyball, SUP ing to the islands and just relaxing in a hammock on the beach!! It's the perfect trip!

Took advice from the owner/manager of our hostel and took the mammallena shuttle bus to playa blanca. Caught it at 1pm (it's a modern air conditioned van with a friendly driver), got there at 2pm and so we missed most of the hawkers. Stayed overnight and caught the shuttle the next day at 11am straight back to our hostel as the return price could be used the next day. Wished we could've stayed longer as the beach was absolutely gorgeous! Mammallena made everything easy, stored our big bags, and made sure we had a room at the hostel the day we got back. A easy, economical, & comfortable option to get to playa blanca.

We sailed on La Gitanita booked through Mamallena Tours. We had an amazing time, German the Captain was fantastic and gave us confidence in his abilities to look after the 12 of us on rough seas on a long crossing. The crew were amazing and the food was incredible, 3 Meals a day so tasty and fresh! We had lobster one night, we were pretty spoilt! The boat is well equipped with snorkelling equipment and a stand up paddle board. We had lots of time in the San Blas islands to explore and enjoy ourselves. Most of us were late 20s into our 30s, we had a few drinks and a laugh, but not a “party” boat which was prefect for us. Highly recommend this boat!

We did the five night Cartagena to Panama San Blas sailing trip.

Amazing experience overall with a fantastic bunch of people and an incredible captain and crew. Thanks to Richard, Charli, Nat, Keenan and Ori, I can't recommend this boat enough!! 5 stars 😊

Nathalie our chef did an amazing job keeping us all well fed. I was so impressed with her cooking for 25 people in the boats little kitchen!
They also had a lovely dog on board, Maxi who everyone loved.

We had a "double bed" in the main area which was described as the salon when we booked it. There were three others in this area, our bed was definitely on the small side but we fit just fine. We were happy with this area as it had the most airflow and wasn't cramped if not feeling the best at sea.

The islands themselves are beautiful and the water is so warm. We had a great time swimming off the boat, to uninhabited islands and the crew brought us to a nice little spit for some snorkelling where a few of us were lucky enough to see a nurse shark.

We had a great volleyball tournament with our group and established the annual San Blas beach volleyball tournament 😀.
Richard and Keenan provided the catches of the day with some fresh Mahi mahi, king fish and Lobster along the way.
