Trips are about unique experiences, and my most recent trip to Cartagena with Alternative Travel was not only that but also unforgettable. The intrepid Josmary Palacio, our Asesora de Ventas, made much of my dreams come true as I was not only my group’s trip planner but, undesirably, also the birthday planner. For this role, Josmary was extremely accommodating to my questions and had a keen eye for planning out whatever I needed on our stay in Cartagena. One memorable experience was Alternative Travel’s Mangroves Tour experience, which is genuinely immersing and peaceful. Juan Lombana, our tour guide, is a bright young man who enjoys putting a smile on his groups’ faces. He was informative and charismatic, which helps to fully appreciate the mangroves, the people, and wildlife that play a vital role in this Caribbean ecosystem. My overall experience with Alternative Travel is an absolute 10, but I imagine that anyone that chooses to go with Alternative Travel will also feel the same way afterward. Enjoy!

It is my second time in Cartagena but I have to admit it is much more impressive than my last visit in Colombia 3 years ago. With the tours from Nina I was first of all welcomed to an awesome little group of locals and foreigners. Even though I traveled alone this time I was feeling like traveling with friends, very well taken care of. Especially with the few locals in our tours I got to know a lot more about the culture and people here in Colombia. My tour guides were Nina, Luis and Andy. “Alternative Travel Cartagena” has specialized tour guides for each tour. All of them are super nice and great tour guides. With Nina I got a lot of information about the cultural differences and therefore more understanding for the country. With Luis I had a super energetic and beautiful bicycle tour, I would never have found the way myself but his sense of navigation and motivating us in this different climate was amazing. Very good organized. With Andy I learned sooooooo much about the history of Cartagena and he took us to amazing places I would have passed if he wouldn’t have pointed them out. I was amazed how many languages they all speak….Spanish of course, German, English, Italian, French….. My favorite of the 3 tours I booked was the big beach La Boquilla. After having so many adventures and exploring Cartagena it was sooooooo nice to stay some hours at this beautiful long beach La Boquilla. I was lucky because there have been almost no other clients. Maybe due to the fact that this place was outside of Cartagena and we went there in the middle of the week. I went swimming in the blue ocean, had some fresh lemonade, slept a bid in the hammock, read my book and ate an awesome lunch. Fresh fish, some local super delicious cook banana or so, salad and rice. Best food I had in Cartagena so far :) Plus this place was soooo clean….the beach, the relax area and the bathrooms. Well, overall a good last day in Cartagena before my flight back home.

I would highly recommend this tour to the first free town in the Americas. The Palenque locals were very welcoming, demonstrating their local practices and ways of life, and our tour guide in Palenque was very informative. We really enjoyed trying out the moonshine and also the delicious fish and coconut rice we were served for lunch. Palenque is like a little piece of Africa in Colombia and is an important piece of history and to understanding more about what happened to the slaves brought to the Americas. Our tour guide Will did a great job and answered many questions we had on a wide variety of topics. Highly recommend taking time during your visit to Cartagena to take this tour to Palenque.

If you want to see touristic stuff, don't go! If you want to get a real Colombian experience, then we can most warmly recommend to book a tour with Will. Even he doesn't look like a Colombian at all, he it is from the bottom of his heart and he'll show you "his" city in the very colombian way. We (me and my 13 years old daughters) visited with him the bazurto- market, I highly recommend to go there with somebody who knows because it's so huge and like a labyrinth... Afterwards we made the coconut-workshop in "La Boquilla", also a very interesting experience. You get close to the people and participate a little bit their lifes .... Will is a wonderful and nice person, I can highly recommend him 😀. By the way, he doesn't only speak a fluent English, he also speaks very good German, so if you need a guide who speaks German, so also ask for him :-)

We did the street food tour and the market tour both with Will. He was an amazing guide, and his passion for Cartagena’s history, people and food really shows! We ate at delicious places where he knew everyone, and the market was such a wonderful slice of life Cartagena. Will even took the time to learn what kinds of foods we were passionate about and catered the tour to us. I highly recommend both Will and the tour company!
