I use to live in Cartagena years ago and go back to visit often. This is why and how to do LA POPA. La Papa is worth visiting for one reason.. the panoramas of Cartagena are second to none. There is no other place that will afford you this kind of view. The history of the Popa is quite fascinating and worth reading up on but let's face it, you can do that with wikipedia or google. You don't need to visit there to read up on how it was founded or it's cultural significance. So much of it is now shut down to visitors that it's about a 30-45 visit if you're just reading the signage and seeing the artifacts that have on site. Long time ago you could see the entire thing and it was much more of an attraction. Now it's only worth going up there if you want to see the breathtaking vistas of Cartagena. You will not be able to capture the entire city in a single shot. I'll explain where and how to get the best pictures. First how to get there. You can take a bus, taxi, private car or rental. I always get a driver or rent a car depending on what I'll be seeing in the country each visit. Bus is the cheapest route but you're packed in like sardines and on a time table plus you are dumped into the site with tons of others meaning you're constantly waiting for your turn to take pictures. I suggest taxi, private car or rental. DO NOT EVER HIKE to the Popa. The neighborhoods surrounding the entrance are NOT SAFE for hiking. Plus it's a winding road leading up and cars and busses do not take especial care driving up and down, you're likely to get hit. Once you arrive, go through the main gate/pay the entrance fee ($7 USD last time I went in 2019). You'll come up several steps and see the main city view on the right. Continue down this path all the way on the right until you can't walk any further. This is the best place to get your first panorama of Boca Grande and Centro. This is the main part of Cartagena that is what you are wanting to see. This will give you half of the city in a single shot. The second picture of the rest of city will need to be taken from inside the Popa. Walk into the main building, find the steps that go upstairs, go to the far Southeastern corner of the building. You'll know you're there when you walk through the room with a bunch of money from different countries and find the old piano. In that room there is an open window with bars on it that you can hold your camera out and take your second panorama of the back half of the city. You'll be able to see the airport and where the rest of 1 million Cartageneros live. Once you're done with your picture I typically spend about 30-40 mins seeing the rest of the site. There is some beautiful architecture and artifacts on site. All in all about an hour total. Taxis have a published rate, they're not allowed to charge more than that. It was about $15-$20 USD. If you drive a rental up, there will be some dude who will try and "help" you park your car (there is no fee for parking) but he'll expect some kind of money from you. I gave him 3,500 peso ($1 USD) and he was fine with that. Warning about driving yourself. The roads up there are terrible and the neighborhoods are not safe. If you're going to drive yourself, make sure to get up and down well before dusk. You DO NOT want to be driving in that neighborhood in the evening. Traffic is a complete mess there so budget about 30-40 mins to get up and another 30 mins to get down. Use any GPS app, google maps and waze was the only thing that worked in the country for me. Apple maps doesn't work anywhere down there (as of Nov 2019).

Great and beautiful place to go. A taxi charged us 50,000 for all 3 and he wait for us and take us down to the city. This place is good for great pictures and have a nice history behind. You must go in car not walking.

An interesting trip to the top of the highest hill in the district through Cartagena favellas. The convent is interesting but the views over the city are the highlight.

This convent is beautiful. The brick arches are lovely, great story boards to see the history. The view from outside of the whole city is amazing.
