I preferred this church to the nearby cathedral. Building commenced over 400 years ago but progress was sporadic and slow taking over 100 years to complete in stages. An impressive main wooden altar and two impressive side altars as well as several minor ones. Large solid pillars evidence its age of and still in daily use for masses

By far and away one of the most beautiful churches in Cartagena, this is a very central place of worship still in active daily use. It has think walls and a lovely orange facade leading onto a nice plaza. There's a distinctive Botero statue just outside the main door.
Beatiful altar and just to the right side near the front is a beatiful wooden carved Christ on the cross, very sacred to and venerated by the locals.
I went back several times, its a really beautiful place

Get the audio guided tour. Much history inside. nice to hear about activist priests that worked with both Indians and slaves. Sad history about all the invasions, disease and pain.

We went to a wedding, this church is astonishing. The architecture is incredible, and it is well kept.

This is a fabulously paint to church with lots of bright blue colors that evoke the city of Cartagena. They are very particular about people taking pictures here and there is mass going on a lot so be careful. The church is also closed a lot of the day. The pay particular attention to the floor which is paved with gravestones. And the lovely blue colors in the dome. It's such a Caribbean church in so many ways very lovely. In front of the Plaza Santo Domingo which is also beautiful little spot to rest.

While the structure itself is breathtaking, it was the audio tour that really made it a not-to-be-missed experience. Placards set up in different locations throughout the church tell the history of the Dominican friars who came to Cartagena and defended the Indigenous people from Spanish oppression among other historical highlights.

This is no longer "part" of Santo Domingo church, but is the former cloister of the monastery next door. It is now the Spanish international aid agency's training centre in Cartagena - public access is permitted. You just have to ask/smile at the guide - the entrance is next to the entrance to the church. It is an enchanting place, beautifully renovated-reimagined by the Spanish aid agency.

Our hotel was close to Templo de Santo Domingo and we heard their were Zumba parties there on Sunday night. We had a pizza at a table across the street and watched crowds dance Zumba as well as street performers...one of the best mimes I've ever seen. Fun location.
