A Botero sculpture
Jun 2019
There are other cities with lots of Fernando Botero sculptures and paintings in Colombia, but it was nice to see at least one here in Cartegena. He donated it to Cartegena in 2000.
It is a lovely piece of art, and it is major photo op location - right in the middle of Santo Domingo Plaza right in front of one of the main churches in town.
Cartegena is great!

Famous statute for a memorable photo experience
Feb 2020
If you are a Botero fan like me, any sculpture or painting will be on the agenda. This statute is in a square in front of a church; you can't miss it.

Fat Lady Statue

Just a big bronze fat lady statue. Hard to miss. Not sure if I’d go out of my way to see this but it was interesting

There She is!
Dec 2019
Remarkable sculpture in the Walled City/Cartagena. She lies between a Cathedral and an outside cafe - kind of an interesting placement! Make sure you stop and take YOUR photo of her. She's a popular backdrop for photos. Give her a rub for good luck!

Recognisable after visiting the botero museum in Bogota
Dec 2019
This little square is a meeting point due to the recognisable statue. Lots of street vendors selling Botero paintings and replica models of ‘el gato.’ Lovely spot.

Keep your hands to yourself!

It is difficult to not touch La Gorda and you can see the shiny areas where people have grabbed! Had to take home a small statuette.

A very popular sculpture in Cartagena
Nov 2019 • Couples
An interesting and popular sculpture in Cartagena. Based upon our experience it looked like it might be THE most popular sculpture in Cartagena. Rubbing or touching Gertrude is suppose to bring good luck. Obviously, based on the shiny parts, certain anatomical parts are preferred over others. The plaza was very busy, and everyone, if not touching Gertrude, was taking lots of photos.

Always a pleasure to see a Botero
Oct 2019
The statue is in the middle of a very active square. You'll note that certain parts of her are shinier than others. That's because rubbing her is supposed to bring you good luck. I rubbed her toes. Apparently guys prefer rubbing other parts, judging by how shiny they were.
