Walking about with the Overseas Adventure Travel main and local tour guides, we passed by the house once occupied by 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature-winning Sr. García Marquez, the beloved Colombian author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love In the Time of Cholera. The building is now a private residence. Only fans will find it of interest, but it is a photo op while walking about the many attractions in Cartagena. What makes this special is that the building has not been razed to become the site of a skyscraper, as what has happened to much of the colonial walled city.

This is simply a house that Gabo bought and then remodelled. He lived there only briefly, but it still belongs to his family. It is just inside the city walls (best seen from up there) and easy to locate by its unusual style. A couple of unconnected adjacent properties trade on his name and fame. Had to see it though as Gabo was part of the reason for including Cartagena on our itinerary.

This house is a private residence and cannot be entered. It is worth a walk by (although difficult to find much to look at from the street) if you're in the area since he was a Nobel Prize winner. There are a few spots that capitalize on being close to his former residence.

Difficult to find and, in the end, it is just a painting on the wall. You can´t visit the actual house, which became a hotel

The house can only be seen from the outside as it now a private residence. Tall orange walls is all that can be seen. The cafe next door has a mural of his portrait.

We walked to this house from our hotel around 10am today Tuesday because online search results stated it was open since 9am but the house is closed. We asked around and were told the house is no longer open to visitors and hasn’t been for some time.

There is a Gabriel Garcia Márquez menu tour of different restaurants and scenes described in his books with tastings of food and the guide sharing recordings from the books. I give the menu tour a 5 and museum a 3.
Trying to find the “Gabo” museum the guide mentioned was not easy, many people never heard of the Columbian Nobel prize writer, after many wring turns it is in the University of Cartagena, but not in the main building.
Much of the building was under construction, so maybe a museum is in progress. The translation under his picture “The memory of the heart eliminates the bad memories and magnifies the good ones and thanks to that artifice we manage to cope with the past.”
I had my heart set on finding a museum shop with gold fish to put on a necklace and yellow butterflies on post cards to send back to the US.

i suppose this review may get squashed as i didn't visit the house but rather did the gabriel garcia marquez walking tour. our hotel contacted the vendor who came to the hotel to show us what to do. it cost $25usd i think or was it $40? i can't remember. $40 seems like a lot but if it was i wanted to immerse myself into the city as soon as i arrived and i thought this was a good way. it's an audio tour with two maps, one to guide you from point to point the other with helpful photos of what you should be looking for. it is quite lengthy, at least 2 hours with 3 necessary to finish. you do get to keep the device for 24 hours so you can always finish the next day or just move at a slow pace and do other sight seeing. there's no requirement to follow the numbers exactly. it's a lot of information and they make references to some of the 20 books he's written. it was a little confusing at a few points, maybe the heat was getting to me. hope you enjoy.

The house cannot be visited. I would not recommend to make a long detour, but if you are near you can pass by and have a short look.
