Walking down this street on a hot afternoon with my two teenage girls and wife was not a pleasant experience. We walked to the Cathedral and back, but did not feel at ease so we got a taxi quickly and left to a nicer neighberhood.

This is a plaza in the downtown "mercado" district. The plaza is very nice. Lots of trees and benches, a couple monuments, all hand-layed brick.

My family spent a good part of an evening hanging out in this plaza. The people watching was great, there were tons of vendors with food and other items, and lots of performers. The plaza is right across the street from Catedral Metropolitana Maria Reina....More

If you want to see the old commercial part of the city this is the place to start in the way to San Nicolas Church. It is a safe place to walk and see the street activity during the day. I was here from 11-1.
