This building is the main heritage landmark in downtown Ningbo. It is fully open to the public. There is a commercial street at the back, not very authentic though.

I guess this is part of the old city wall, and the old street is just behind this tower, a vegetarian buffet restaurant is next to this tower.

First, name. This area is "Gulou" which housed the city's drum, which was the traditional way to tell time. Many cities, Nanjing, for example, have "Gulou." Ningbo's Gulou happens to be very accessible from the "Gulou Subway Stop" At time of visiting it had a photo exhibit up the stairs featuring photos of Ningbo from 1950-1950. Unfortunately there was no English descriptions but the photos were great anyway. Right next to the drum tower are the remains of a commerce warehouse from the Yuan dynasty. Behind the drum tower are several blocks of streets with replica buildings all filled with modern days shops and restaurants, generally not the touristy trinkets should elsewhere. Consequently, it has a much more local feeling. At the very north end of the commercial streets is Zhongshan Park, one of the nicer and more elaborate public parks I've seen in downtown urban areas of China. Great place to people watch since many are out doing exercises and practicing their musical instruments. Inside the park is a free museum to Zheng Cengshi who clearly was a local war hero of some kind. Easy 10 minute free walk through. English descriptions are minimal. All a in all, there is a lot to see in the area encompassing Gulou, the Commecial Street, and Zhongshan Park. Many parts of China have these areas but this was one of the better ones (perhaps) because the shops were not exclusively directed at tourists.

A nice old tower, from long ago. Worth a visit, although on its own, it may not be worth going too much out of your way yo get to. There are lots of things to see nearby, though, so combine it with other sights.

The Drum Tower itself is neat but you only need a few minutes to see it. The surrounding area has some older style buildings but with renovated facades and such. You can also find most modern amenities like McD's, KFC, Starbucks... etc.

I've been to a few of these "ancient" streets, towns etc. This one is the worst one so far. Okay the drum tower is quite interesting as there is a mixture of some architectonical styles... but the complex isn't interesting at all. There isn't anything special.... Only some teahops, restaurants, little stores and that's it... If you are around you can grab some food there or drink but it really doesn't seem like worth going there unless Ningbo is the very only city (and first) you are visiting in China and you wanna get at least a bit of the "Chinese feel"...

Compared to the Gulo in Beijing, this one is horribly commercial. Very busy and noisy with tacky shop after tacky shop. Go if you happen to be in the area but otherwise do not go out of your way to find it.

They have converted the lanes behind this tower to lots of small shops and eateries. Good to go there with a empty stomach to try the different stalls there.

The tower is not far from Tianyi square. It is located in the old part of the city, you can go to the top to see the scenery if you wish.
Behind the tower you will find many streets with local restaurants and traditional cuisine, and you can also buy souvenirs.
There are a few places for dumplings and noodles, but their menu is Chinese, but some of them have photos. I personally recommend that you go to many places in Ningbo with your Chinese friend's or Chinese colleagues because it helps explain and translate.
If you like to see traditional things like me, I suggest you check it out.
