Poorly organized trek
Aug 2016 • Friends
We went through the John's Cafe to organize a trek in the Mustagh Ata. In the end, we were quite disappointed by the organization. The reputation seems to be out of date.

+ John is quite good at getting the trek permits
+ Transport from Kashgar to Karakol is okay

- John is not in China at the moment so we had to deal with her sister, a willing person, but the preparation was a bit messy
- We paid a high price but with no idea of what it covered. At the end of the day, some unexpected expenses and quality standards not meeting the price.
- We had a terrible guide, with no experience in mountain and barely able to walk
- Negotiations with camelmen turned to be painful and poorly handled by the guide / John's Café
- Some equipment (tent, mats ...) available, but of average quality

In the end, quite a lot of stress and very high price not justified by the service we received. We had the feeling they weren't accountable for anything, paying no attention to the satisfaction of their clients. Good place for taking a beer and having a lovely Chinese meal, but I wouldn't recommend to go trek with them.

Like other travellers, we had a negative experience with John's travel advice. Like others we had agreed on a programme and price in advance, but when showing up all of a sudden the 2 nights hotelbooking turned out not to be included and some other items of the package agreed also had disappeared. The overnight stay in a dirty (no toilet at all), overcrowded Yurt at Karakuli Lake also turned out not to be fully included in the package agreed. So all in all we paid a very high price for only invitation letter, transport from PAK-border to Kashgar and onwards till Kyrgistan-border.
John was not present himself in Kashgar (only via the phone), but only his sister (who is very kind, but not in the position to change/do anything to solve + her English in quite poor).
Years ago our travelmates had dealt very satisfactory (and nicely) with Mr John. However, now it's all disappeared; he now seems only be interested anymore to earn very much money without delivering proper service.

Good service, ask questions
John's Cafe on site in the Seman Hotel, Kashgar, is a great resource, and most guests spend some time there. Beware the delay in food coming out - waited 45 mins for a pancake and more than on hour for some burgers. Though, at 12rmb a pretty good burger, worth waiting for! Good advice from John and his wife. Easy to post messages to meet others interested in sharing the cost of a car. For an overnight trip to Lake Karakul, including a drive up to Tashkurgan, we paid 1400rmb total, plus 50rmb/head to stay at the lake, including meals. Make sure you ask the air conditioning works!

A bit of a rip-off, though with a lot of Charme
We have been to John's Cafe in Kashgar, especially for it's tours as it was recommended in the Lonely planet. Via Email I had booked two two day tours and John was really friendly, nice and helpful. He offered to pick us up at the airport and was duly charming.

However in the midth of the two tours they seemed to change magically. UNfortunatley we had paid in advance and once some place was later not included or the 2-day tour magically turned into one evening, one night and one morning etc.

The people were friendly and sold these changes with a lot of charm, however we were rather disappointed. Coming back to Shanghai, actually a lot of people confirmed that the place is known for ripping off People. Supposedly there are quite a few other Guides around town (mostly Urighur ones) which are fairer.

I wouldn't recommend going on tour with JOhn's cafe. Or if you do be very precise on what you want, what you get and pay in stages...
