Mesmerising place

Heavenly lake is the most popular attraction for those tourists who are Urumqi based. In fact it's not that far from the capital of Xinjiang. I have been there a few days ago and I was looking forward to writing my review here on Tripadvisor as this is the best place I have visited during my holiday in Xinjiang. Therefore I warmly recommend readers not to miss this scenic spot. It's very crowded though. However it's not a big issue as long as you are eager to walk all around the lake as I did. In order to complete the loop 4-5 hours are needed. All in all I have walked 14 kilometers for a total of nearly 24000 steps. The first half of the path went smoothly...the second part was definitely more grueling as I had to climb up to the top of three hills but it was definitely worth doing so as the view of the lake from the top is breathtaking. You can enjoy your hiking as there are no people around. The vast majority of visitors prefer taking the boat or the cableway to reach the top of Tianshan mountain. Those who prefer walking generally reach the nearby temple which is pretty close to the entrance. Don't forget bringing with you some bottles of water and some food as along the lake there are no restaurants or convenience stores.

The Heavenly Lake

Awesomely beautiful views. The Heavenly Lake of Tianshan is a show of the beauty of nature, and some say, a reflection of what heaven is like.

Lovely place to relax

While a popular "grab a photo" site with 1000s of daily visitors, it is so much more. Plan to have time to take the boat ride or even better, a hike off into the forest surrounding the lake. It is so peaceful, really Heavenly! take your preferred snacks and beverages with you on the hike for a picnic. There are plenty of places to eat at the top by the bus stop and above. Also at the bottom of of the bus route--we had a delightful meal under the grape leaves at one of dozens of small family spots.

One of the most beautiful Lakes

Tianchi is a splendid lake full of walking trails sitting about halfway up Tianshan. Whether you walk around looking at the sites and waterfalls, or you take a ferry ride on the lake you're going to have a wonderful time.

Weird weather
Oct 2019
We drove here from Urumqi last week, and the plan was to have lunch in a yurt, shuttle to the lake, and take a boat ride out on the lake. We got on our first shuttle to the yurt, and the excitement on the bus was that it had started snowing. We got to the yurt and had a delicious lunch - the table is about 8" from the floor, so those with arthritic knees beware. After lunch we boarded the shuttle to drive the switchback road to the lake. It was decided that chains should be put on the bus tires, our next adventure. This process took about 20 minutes, since the bus had to lurch forward and back to properly adjust the tightness of the chains. We finally got underway, and the bus climbed upward. When we reached the bus drop-off, there was about a 1/4 mi. walk up to the lake. Normally, this wouldn't bother me, but we were at about 6,000 ft., and the snow was steadily falling. Our group gasped to the top, and I commented to my friend, "I bet that it's pretty." The snow pretty much obscured the view, and the boats had stopped running. Not for the first time this trip, however, we were the local attraction. As a tall, blond, Westerner I can't tell you how many times I was asked (or not) to be photographed, as was the rest of our group. I find it funny/odd that people desire pictures of perfect strangers whom they've posed with, but since the lake wasn't in view that day, maybe we were stand-ins for Yeti!

Tianshan Tianchi Lake - also known as Heavenly Lake
Jul 2019
Tianshan Tianchi Lake is about 50 KM from Urumqi city. Passengers are picked up from a junction collecting point and taken to the "Heavenly Lake".

The air-condition luxury bus leaves around 9 AM. The lady conductor spoke in Chinese for quite a while explaining passengers who were 98% Chinese. After a smooth ride, we reached the place where one has to buy entrance ticket. Our tour guide collected the money and bought tickets for us. Considering a large crowd at the ticket entrance pavilion, this service by the guide was well appreciated.

As it was past noon time, we were served with lunch which was included in the tour price (including to and fro shuttle bus). Altogether the price was 225/- CYN - almost US$ 35/- per person. In my opinion that is cheap and more than worth it.

After passing the gate we were shifted into another bus which took us to Tianshan Tianchi Lake, not far away. We got down and were directed to go through small alley where kiosks were selling souvenirs and food.

After getting through this place, we were again asked to board the bus for final destination. In short, passengers were made to go through the alley so that they can buy stuff or have quick snack.

The bus took us to fabulous alpine roads cutting through the mountain to stop at the Heavenly Lake. The Lake is picturesque surrounded by mountains which are called Maya Mountains. Beautiful scenery and paradise for photo and vedio-graphers. Then we were also taken to aerial-tramway to higher mountain area from where the view was out of this world. One can compare with Banff near Calgary in Canada. The air was cool and fresh which was welcome after going through the hot sun of Urumqi city.

After about 2 to 2-1/2 hours of sight-seeing the Lake, we were taken back to our buses for onward return to the city. When in Urumqi, this tour is a must. And go with the guide ---- it will be easy.

Worth booking a tour- great walk around the lake in peace!
Jul 2019 • Solo
I stayed at Ziyou International Youth Hostel and they offered a day tour for CNY 220. A person picked me up at the hotel at 8am. We walked about 10 minutes to the bus- which left just before 9am. We stopped at a supermarket on the way but I suggest you bring your own drinks and food or pay a bit more. We then transferred to the park bus and with 1 ridiculous stop we arrived 1 kilometer short of the lake at 12:15. At this point you can take a shuttle or walk the 10 minutes to the lake. I walked and had read that if you walk around the lake to the left you will be turned back so I walked to the right. I proceeded to walk around the lake and while there were thousands of visitors to the lake you will walk around the lake mostly in total peace. The first half of the walk is almost all level. After you make it to the other side of the lake there will be some ups and downs so while you have time to finish the walk, don’t go too slow and don't underestimate the ups and downs. If all works out, you might still have enough time to visit the pond and waterfall just before the boat landing. Our group met back at the shuttle bus at 17:00. Our tour included dinner which was very good but not until after we left the park at 18:30. We returned to Urumqi around 21:00. I exchanged my WeChat with the guide which is helpful and has a nice English/Chinese translation.

Beautiful lake and mountains
Jul 2019 • Couples
I understand that this has changed a lot recently but having visited I can understand why.
This spot has become massively popular with Chinese tourists and the number of people visiting is only feasible because of the changes made, to park well away from the lake and to bus people up.
The stop off point half way up is unnecessary, but convenient for grabbing a quick somsa.
The view points on arrival at the lake were heaving, but start to walk around the lake on the board walk and you will quickly lose the people.
When we visited it was not possible to do a complete circuit so we walked to the opposite end and back. In hindsight it might have been better (if possible) to get the boat across the bit that you cannot walk (to the left on arrival at the lake) the walk around the rest to prevent the needs to retrace steps.
The walk to the opposite end (right hand side) of the lake took around 1 hour 45 minutes one way.
On the return we passed many brides and grooms have photos taken with the lake and mountains as back drop.
