This was the first mosque that we tried to visit in Urumqi. There were police at the gate and they told us that we could not take photos. We ended up viewing seven mosques on this day, but were more careful after this experience, and decided to take photos first and ask questions later. This mosque is easily reached by taking a bus to Remnin Road and getting off near to the Jiefang South Road stop. The BRT is on this route. We walked from the south gate of Peoples Park.

This is an area of many mosques, as the Beifang Mosque is on Renmin Road, behind the China construction bank, and the Hezhou and Shaanxi Mosques are at the intersection of Yonghe Main Alley and Jianzhong Road, which is a short walk in an easterly direction. There are many beautiful mosques in Urumqi, so do not be put off by the heavy police presence. Tourists are not a regular sight in Urumqi, so are seen as a nuisance. A quick photo of the mosques is generally not a problem, although the police have the right to ask you to delete the photo.

I tried to go into this mosque but the guard would not let me through to take a look, outside there is a police station with 5 police in riot gear 24/7, although nice to look at, I would not linger around too long.

Beautiful building

Another splendid mosque of urumqi. Here there is nothing to see inside but the building itself is extremely beautiful and worth a visit.
