An amazing trip to Xinjiang: I’d longed to go to Xinjiang and the west of China and I wasn’t disappointed. I found the Silk Road Expeditions website and emailed them. Prompt email correspondence from Waheed who organised a guided tour just for me due to low tourist numbers. Met him at Kashgar airport and we were off: three days looking around Kashgar and a road trip along the Karakoram Highway; truly stunning scenery which for me was a highlight. Kashgar is very different to other towns in China so it was very interesting to appreciate the difference there in both culture and architecture. The animal trading market, street markets, old town, mosque, Concubine tomb, all interesting places to visit and Waheed was my driver and guide and happily explained about these places as we went along. It all went smoothly and I’d recommend contacting Waheed and talking to him about what you want to see and do. After Kashgar I flew to Urumqi and had a second guide and driver - also excellent and very knowledgeable. What he doesn’t know about the local area and history isn’t worth knowing! We spend only a little time in Urumqi itself and then went to Turpan; more stunning scenery on the drive, ancient villages, Buddhist tombs and caves, markets, grape drying houses, again, there’s a lot to see and do. The final day we added in Heavenly Lake - I feel this is a must see, if scenery and nature is your thing then it’s not to be missed. It had snowed the day before we visited and it was like a scene out of Narnia! I feel this lake would be wonderful to see in any season though. Maybe this should be in the itinerary rather than a last minute add on; I had a late flight out of Urumqi on my final day and so added this in at extra cost; we maybe should have included it from the beginning so there was no waste of time on the final day. A trip to remember, great memories and a stack of stunning photos!

The open market in Kashgar was one of the most fascinating place on Earth, The local would bring their livestock to town in their trucks, sell one horse carriage like new cars, sell their butchered meats on the sidewalks, young boys making spindles by the hundreds in a space of a 12 by12 store on main street. The men wore dress slacks with wore dress shirts while the women wore elegant traditional dress, while the children laugh and smile at you.

I visited Xinjiang after the National Holiday (Golden Week, 07.10.19) last fall. The weather was gorgeous and temperatures still mild. I have chosen Waheed Arslan for the Southern region of Xinjiang/silk road: Kashgar, the Kunjerab Pass trip and the Aksu/Kuqa area, but he is also a great expert for the center of Xinjiang/silk road (Heavenly lake, Turpan, flaming mountains, Jiaoje stone town, traditional irrigation systems) or the north of Xinjiang: colored mountains, Kanase Hu /Lake, deserts in Altay area. Waheed is a very professional, knowledgeable guide and an approachable and kind person. Before starting our four-day tour he met me in person at the evening before starting the tour to fix the details, like where to stay and the most beautiful and best places to visit. Waheed is a safe driver and his Van ist comfortable. We first visited a few historical sites in and around Kashgar/Kashi - including the old town, where parts of the movie Kite Runner have been made- before taking the road to Kunjerab pass. The scenery on the way up to Tashkorgan is simply breathtaking, the shapes, colors and dimensions of the rocks against a deep blue sky along the road seem unreal, almost like in a fairy tale. We stopped at Kunlu Lake, in front of the most amazing 8000er mountain I have ever seen: the Mustagh Ata / Mustagh Mountain. We visited a Kirghiz family and savored Jak Yoghurt in a Jurte and I also bought some handcrafted fabric made with camel hair. We spent the night in Tashkorgan and continued the next day up to the Kunjerab Pass. On the way back we went to see the Stone town near Tashkorgan and I again truly enjoyed the amazingly beautiful mountains, rocks and the animal herds of Jaks, sheep and camels in the waste, ocher-colored meadows of the valleys. After spending the night in Kashgar we drove along the impressive Taklamakan desert to Aksu. From there we went do see the 1000 Buddha caves of Kizil and the Subashi ruins, a stone town build at the same time as Banyan in Afghanistan. We closed a wonderful day at the Tianshan Kuqa Grand Canyon in the Keziliya valley, also located in the Aksu region in northern Kuqa: from east to west it is about an impressive 5.5 kilometers long canyon. I would choose Whaeed again, for his professionalism, dedication, customer friendliness and great value for money. It was my most impressive individual tour I ever made (landscapes, cultures, historical sites)
