My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic evening with Chino in September. This was our second tour with Lost Plate, the first in Xi'an, and this team does not disappoint. We were treated to wonderful flavors in locations we would have had a hard time finding ourselves. Chino is a very knowledgeable food guide and had plenty of recommendations for further food exploration of Chengdu. Don't miss!!

I literally flew into Chengdu after a business trip to Shanghai, checked into my hotel, and met up with the tour. I highly recommend it as an introduction to the amazing complexity of Sichuan cuisine--most of which is found in their street food. Our guide, Olivia, made sure we had plenty to eat and drink and described the various traditions and ingredients that are common in the region. I never would have been able to find these local places, nor would I have known what to order. And don't worry about the spice level--the chilis are essential to the flavor and deliver a nice mellow heat. Booking and communications are easy, and the Chengdu metro is quite friendly for folks who use public transit when they travel. I've attached a photo of the tuk-tuk. I didn't plan to go out afterwards, and that was a good decision. I wish we had received a list of the restaurants and dishes we tried in each--if I had more time in Chengdu I would have liked to retrace my steps for various lunches or dinners.

Hi, you just made our day with this excellent review, thank you so much! We take great pride in carefully selecting the restaurants and food we try on our tour and also the way we train our guides, because our tour is more than just the food itself, but the experience of being in a variety of authentic local settings and the opportunity to learn about the food culture of the city. We are really glad to come across guest like you that appreciates the thought that goes into our tour and we certainly look forward to hosting you again in the near future!

Delicious food in totally hidden away eateries, that you would unlikely find on your own. The tuk-tuk is a great idea, as it allows you to enjoy the evening city life while seeping your beer, and takes you pretty fast from one place to the next.
Chino is an excellent host and guide. The organisation was spotless and he shared vasts amounts of very interesting information to share with us all.
It was great to have a chat with him towards the end of the tour over some tasty Chinese wine.
We would recommend this tour to anyone. Best food we had in Chengdu and a lot of fun!

After read all the reviews i thought this experience would be amazing but was not. The food was ok with a lot of variety, but almost all the places were empty and half of my questions had no answer.I really wanted to learn about the food but was not the case. By another side is expensive for what is it, thinking that the food is really cheap in China, and you need to go to a meeting point, the tour is pricy. I was alone with the guide and we had to wait another person that never came and as a result one of the restaurants was already closed, cutting short the tour and with no apologise for it.
In the day after this tour I did another with another agency and the diference was brutal, for almost the same price I had a full day with private driver with pick up in my hotel and a guide that could answer all my question, so was impossible to be even more desapointed with this tour.
If you are interested just in try some diferent food, the tour is ok, but if you expect a bit more, think twice.

Hi juschaffer, thank you for sharing your experience and we are so sorry that we did not meet your expectations. Based on your comments here, I am personally disappointed that we didn't deliver a better tour for you. We take all comments and feedback very seriously and make constant adjustments so we can continue to improve. You did have two unfortunate circumstances occur...first you had to wait for a fellow traveler who didn't show up even though they had contacted us saying they were on their way, and second you visited just before Chinese New Year. This is the coldest time of year when many people are not eating out, and most people are either preparing for their holiday or have already left the city. Beyond this, however, we should still have provided you with a 5-star experience and I assure you that this is not how we run our tours as seen by all of our other reviews. My sincere apologies again, I'll be reaching out to you directly as well.

Went on this tour to try to get a sense of some of the best flavors of Chengdu cuisine that we wouldn't find at a big name restaurant or hot pot place - this tour really succeeded to that end. Our guides were helpful, knowledgeable, informative, and great to hang out with. We really felt we got to both try things we wouldn't otherwise have tried secret dumpling restaurants and bars etc., and got a wide selection of cuisine in one evening that would otherwise have taken several meals. Really highly recommend.

We have been on the Beijing tour twice and as we were in Chengdu with visiting family we couldn't miss the opportunity to try the Lost Plate tour. Our guide Ling was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we really enjoyed her company. As ever our fellow guests were interesting and good fun. Trying food we were not sure of (following on from the world's hottest hot pot the night before) in out of the way places that only locals seem to know about was great fun. We learnt a lot about Sichuan cooking, ate fantastic dumplings, noodles etc and the braver of our party enjoyed Rabbit's head and a nice selection of offal. No pressure to eat anything too scary. We finished off the evening at a Belgium beer bar before Ling helped us with a taxi.

As a crewmember for a major international airlines-i have participated in many tours-If you ever find yourself in China-specifically Chengdu, Beijing or Xian, Do Not Miss the Lost Plate Food Tour-there is no better way to taste the local cuisine. What starts out as a meeting of 9 tourist, and a tour guide, you take off in a tuk-tuk and travel thru streets where cars are not an option, and travel a distance too far to walk. You taste street food and local restaurant specialities, which you would not have the ability to try on your own. Our tour guide, Ling-not only describes the food we were tasting, but describes it's origin along with the ingredients and how to prepare. All of the local favorites are tasted. Ling also takes turns riding in each tuk-tuk and tells the history of the area we are visiting. Her english is perfect! which is very important when taking a tour in a foreign country. Lings outgoing personality and her genuine interest in each guest makes spending time with her on the tour very special. By the end of the night-the group of 9 were like long lost friends having a great time tasting the best of local cuisine-what could be more fun! If you enjoy food, do not miss the opportunity to try all of the local favorites on the Lost Plate Food Tour!!

My boyfriend and I had a great evening on the hotpot and market tour with Chino. Chino was a very knowlegeable guide and showed us some local cuisine which we never would have found on our own especially given the language barrier. You can tell that he has a lot of passion for food. We had a Chengdu waffle, several types of pancakes, the hot pot and 2 desserts. We definitely left with full stomachs! The hot pot was delicious and exceeded my expectations. We did this tour and the Shanghai evening tour and while they were both good I definitely preferred the Chengdu Hotpot one. Highly recommend this tour!

This was the first of four China based food tours I had with this company. Sichuan province has arguably the best cuisine in China. It is always great to have a local show you the ropes when it comes to dinning- especially street food. Guides spoke English well and were very knowledgeable about the establishments. Libations were plentiful and so was the food. I had made a special request to try a local favorite, rabbit's head, and our hosts was most accommodating. You will have great company and make friends very quickly on these intimate tours. And the final destination is a pleasant, trendy sky-rise bar with scenic overlooks. Enjoy your evening with Lost Plate Food Tours.

We are sooo glad you made it to the tour and we are sure our guide got you pumped up once the tour started right? Jumping into the tuktuks to explore the local and learning about the history, food culture and livelihood of the locals was really rewarding isn't it? Our tour is beyond just good food, we get you off-the-beaten path to where the locals really go to, to witness the real authentic buzz. It was definitely a bonus to be able to hit off with the other tour participants who joined for the love for food and we are very happy that you had an exceptional evening. It's amazing that you guys tried it!And we made video of you trying it.That was a fun evening with you! We can't wait to eat with you again soon!

This was the highlight of our trip. Our guide Doreen took us to foodie places that we would never be able to find on our own. We climbed through a window to try the most delicious dumplings and continued with a special array of sichuan noodles, a traditional sichuan feast and plum wine. There were 20 of us from our MBA class and we had such a fantastic time!
