I highly recommend Helen, who guided our group of three during a private two-day tour in Chengdu.
From start to finish, Helen was proactive, enthusiastic and incredibly insightful. She shared fascinating information about the places we visited and offered deeper context about the culture and history of Chengdu and Sichuan. Her eloquent English, extensive local knowledge and friendly, accommodating nature truly elevated our experience. Her flexibility, patience and genuine passion made our stay far more enjoyable than it would have been on our own. She went above and beyond, making us feel like friends rather than just clients.
Here are some highlights of what made our time with Helen so memorable:
- Panda Centre: She knew exactly where and when to go to avoid crowds and see the pandas at their most active.
- People's Park: She introduced us to the local lifestyle, including tea-drinking rituals, line dancing and even the fascinating 'marriage market.'
- Local Market: At our request, she guided us to buy very sweet mandarins and pears from a local market.
- Jinsha Museum: She provided detailed and engaging explanations, bringing the artifacts and history to life.
- Jinli Old Street: She led us to the most interesting spots, helped us purchase local snacks and ensured we didn’t miss anything special.
- Sichuan Opera: She arranged for us to watch an incredible performance at the city’s best opera house.
- Local Restaurants: She took us to authentic local eateries far from the typical tourist traps — hidden gems we would never have found on our own, even with Baidu Maps.
- Community Centre: As an unexpected bonus, Helen introduced us to a local community centre supporting the elderly and individuals with special needs, which was a heart-warming experience.
It’s also worth highlighting the excellent service provided by China Highlights, the only one of three tour companies we approached that was willing to customise our itinerary to our specific needs. We requested two non-consecutive tour days within our five-night Chengdu stay to leave room for independent exploration, and they accommodated this seamlessly. Carrie, our travel advisor, was prompt, helpful and attentive to all our requests. Helen also went the extra mile by suggesting places we could visit on our free days.
Thanks to Helen and China Highlights, our time in Chengdu was truly unforgettable. If you’re considering a private tour, I can’t recommend Helen enough!

We were very lucky tò have Helen as our guide in Chengdu. She suggested tò leave early in the morning tò visit the Giant Panda breeding center avoiding us a neverending queue. She gave us the time we needed and the right amount of information tò give meaning tò the experience. In the afternoon we visited the Giant Buddha by boat and she did her best tò let us exploit the photo opportunities. She Is kind, professional and fun and I hope you'll have the same luck we did!

On our trip to China we had always wanted to include a visit to a giant panda research center. Consulting the China Highligh’s website we discovered that the most suitable place to visit this very friendly bear was Chengdu, an excellent location also for an interesting visit to the Leshan Giant Buddha.
So we planned to stay two nights to make the two visits. The hotel chosen for us by Giulia Zhang was the Tibet Hotel: I must say that it was an excellent choice both for its central location and for the room and the courtesy of the reception.
Our guide spoke English and his name was EVAN. Evan was the best we could hope for from a guide: in addition to speaking almost perfect English, he was absolutely excellent in kindness, competence and knowledge of the territory. On the way up to the Leshan Buddha Temple (300 steps in a place with a humidity we had never experienced before), he was a great help to my wife (who has significant mobility difficulties), he explained to us well what we would see and did not leave us alone for a moment. We then took a short cruise to admire the grandeur of the Buddha from the river and this too was an unforgettable experience thanks to Evan's expertise.
The next day it was finally time to see the pandas. Giulia had suggested a small change of program via WeChat a few days before. The breeding station near Chengdu that we were supposed to visit was so crowded with tourists even in September, that she suggested changing to Dujiangyan, smaller and above all quieter. We accepted the change and it was a good choice. It was a rainy day, but we were able to see the panda enclosures very well and up close. There were pandas of all ages but in the enclosure that Evan called the "nursery", there were two cubs of about a year old with their mother: an extraordinary sight.
On the way back we had to change some cash and even in this case Evan proved to be extremely precious.
Finally, always guided by Evan we visited the largest park in Chengdu (where we ate, always on the suggestion of the excellent Evan, the best dish of Noodles of the entire trip) and the market of the old city.
Overall two unforgettable days, for the places visited, the emotions felt, the perfect organization and the special presence of Evan.
Evan was truly the best guide we had during our trip to China: absolutely the best!

As part of our first trip to China, Chengdu was our fourth destination, and we were fortunate to have Helen from China Highlights as our tour guide. She contacted us 24 hours in advance, providing all the necessary details for our meeting point at the train station. Upon arrival, Helen was waiting for us at the station, accompanied by the driver, and the vehicle provided—a top-quality MPV—was perfect for our group of three. Both Helen and the driver were highly professional, always going above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction.
Helen was incredibly efficient in organizing our itinerary, which included visits to the Panda Center, the Commercial Street, Handicrafts Village, and a series of Chinese shows. She even extended her assistance into the evening, accompanying us until 10 PM to ensure we were well taken care of. One of the highlights was the traditional Sichuan lunch she arranged at a fantastic restaurant, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
In addition to her excellent planning, Helen went the extra mile by gifting each of us something special. On our departure day, she thoughtfully provided us with fruits and snacks for the train journey. She also arranged porter services and access to a lounge at the Chengdu train station, which made our travel experience much smoother.
Helen’s attention to detail and professionalism made her one of the best and most efficient tour guides we’ve ever had. We highly recommend her services to anyone visiting Chengdu.

Our family visited China in August and one of the places on our list to visit was Chengdu. As we were limited on time and we did not speak the local language we decided to research tour companies and we ended up choosing China Highlights. We chose them because of their attention to detail, professionalism and value for their cost and very positive reviews. It was the best decision we made for our visit to Chengdu and our family enjoyed every minute of the tour. Planning the details of the tour with Li Liberman was so easy as he was so helpful and professional and very organized. His communication was so clear and timely which was really appreciated. He really was so helpful in helping us plan a tour catered to our specific interests and our limited time. He provided input to help us make the most of our time in Chengdu without being very long days. And on top of this all, upon our arrival in Chengdu we were so lucky to have an incredible tour guide Bella who made our time in Chengdu so memorable and one we will never forget. She spoke English which was really helpful for us as we do not speak the local language of Mandarin and she went above and beyond with her time and kindness to ensure each of our family members enjoyed their time in Chengdu. We really enjoyed learning about the history of Chengdu, visiting the pandas, historical temples, local tea houses, as well as seeing a local opera show and trying out authentic local food which was a highlight for our family. Our kids really enjoyed seeing all that Chengdu has to offer and we fell in love with this city and the area. The people are so warm and friendly. Our driver “Wu” we was so kind and friendly and always on time each day of the tour. The highlight of this tour for our family truly was Bella. She made the tour so much more ‘richer’ with her kindness, knowledge of the history of Chengdu and China along with her ability to communicate well. She helped us with so many little things from helping us communicate with the hotel staff when we checked in to sorting out details at our check out as we could not speak the language. Bella was very knowledgeable and really shared a lot of information about Chengdu which our family appreciated very much. She had excellent communication skills and she was a very good listener adjusting each day to our changing needs. Our kids loved having Bella as their tour guide. She was so friendly, warm, patient, professional and above all really knew all there was to know about Chengdu and was genuinely so happy to share her knowledge of Chengdu and answer all our questions. Everything went smoothly with no complications. Booking a tour with China Highlights was a very pleasant surprise for us as we were not sure what to expect as our family has never done a tour before when we travel. We usually like to explore new places on our own. We are so happy we chose China Highlights to visit Chengdu. We hope to visit China again one day and when we do we will definitely book with China Highlights again and we hope to get Bella as our guide!

Helen enthusiastically guided us to Panda sanctuary for a wonderful volunteer exerience. We broke bamboo sticks for panda breakfast and watched a panda in his enclosure eating bamboo shoots (about 3 feet away), prepared panda pancakes and sniped bamboo leaves into small pieces to feed elderly pandas. In addition to the fun-filled day watching pandas , we ended the night with a visit to the theater. The next day, Helen took us to People's park to watch people singing, dancing and check out the marriage corner. What an eye opening day. Because of Helen's comprehensive narratives, we learned alot about Chengdu' people, place & culture. Lastly, we were able to sample the famous hotpot even though it was not part of itinerary. Wished we could stay a few more days. Helen really made Chengdu come alive!

We had an amazing time while staying in Chengdu. Our guide, Helen, is amazing. She’s extremely knowledgeable, but also energetic and fun. We had a full day itinerary to visit the Panda base where we had a two hour tour of the nursery gardens as well as the red panda habitat. We then traveled to Leshan to have a delicious local lunch before visiting the famous Buddha carving towering 24 stories tall. Finally, we made our way back to Chengdu where we experienced their famous yin-yang hotpot cuisine before finishing the night watching a local variety show featuring 10 programs. Our kids were 10 and 13 and they both loved the comedy, the face changing finale, and the shadow puppet acts especially. If you book, I’d ask for Helen as she was thoughtful and meticulous throughout, always gauging how the family was doing, if the pace was right, and what types of activities we would like to do that fit our family travel style.

We traveled with China Highlights to Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong. Our itinerary was customized to our specifications by Dora, who was responsive and provided helpful suggestions/recommendations during the planning process.
Our guide was Xiao Ai and she was absolutely wonderful. We had various health issues/accidents pop up that necesitated changes to our itinerary and she and our driver handled everything like a pro. Days on our itinerary were switched around and meals had to be changed/rescheduled/canceled but our trip continued seamlessly. We didn't miss any sites we were supposed to go to, and we always felt very well taken care of.
In addition, China Highlights refunded us amounts for sites where there were senior discounts, and for entering Jiuzhaigou on only one day instead of the originally scheduled two (due to the aforementioned health issues).
We highly recommend China Highlights and would definitely travel with them again.

Our Chengdu tour with FiFi from China Highlights was truly unforgettable. From the moment she greeted us at the train station, her warm and vibrant personality shone through. FiFi’s boundless energy, genuine enthusiasm, and dedication to making our experience perfect were clear every step of the way. She even went out of her way to help us make last-minute itinerary changes without a second thought—her flexibility and willingness to adapt made our visit so much easier and more enjoyable.
FiFi’s knowledge of Chengdu’s rich history and culture added incredible depth to our experience. She guided us to the renowned Panda Breeding and Research Centre, where we were able to observe some of the 300 pandas cared for there. FiFi’s insights made the experience much more meaningful, explaining the center’s conservation efforts and history in a way that truly brought it to life.
But Chengdu isn’t just about pandas, and FiFi made sure we explored beyond that. Thanks to her guidance, we discovered Chengdu’s historical treasures, including Huanglongxi Ancient Town, the Giant Buddha at LeShan and the remarkable Wuhou Shrine. She was there to guide us through the culinary delights of the local hotpot and sweet duck. We hadn’t expected such a wealth of culture and history, but FiFi’s passion for her city gave us a whole new appreciation for Chengdu.

Everyone goes to Chengdu to see the giant panda’s… but it has much more to offer. We have booked a 5 week tour with China Highlights through Asia, and our guide Helen in Chengdu was as friendly and knowledgeable as our China Highlights guides in other cities! Chengdu is home to the main giant panda research centers in China. They are so cute and fun, you can watch them for hours! There are also smaller red pandas, not as cute but still interesting.
After a day with the Panda’s, we went to a traditional Chinese tea house and theatre show that included fire dancing, hand shadows and amazing face changing. Before the show they offer shoulder massages and ear cleaning!
We only stayed for a day, but already want to go back and spend more time in this wonderful city. I highly recommend China Highlights and our guide Helen to anybody interested in this unique experience!

How much the cost for city tour in chengdu

I don’t really know because we paid for a two week tour that included Chengdu. We told China Highlights where we wanted to go and generally what we wanted to see and then they gave us a quote that was less than another travel agency in China. It included domestic airfare, the hotels, transfers, meals etc. We changed our minds a few times and they were helpful with that. Chengdu was just a few days but we saw a lot and the guide was wonderful.

Hi Lynnette, I think there is only one full day program at the Panda Base that we went to starting very early in the morning and ending in the mid-afternoon; all you do is clean the enclosures and make panda cakes. I am sure there is an educational element to it as well. I believe it starts very early in the morning and then ends mid-day. We started our day at the Panda Base petting a panda/taking photos and then walked around for about two hours. Pandas are enchanting, we both felt like we could have watched them all day.

I am visiting two separate days in January and want to know what type of shoes I should bring or boots? I am assuming winter boots?
Also are there lockers? Am I allowed to bring my camera and take photos?

If you arrange through a company as we did, it is very feasible. It is not hard work, it is a method to raise funds and the tourist enjoy these beautiful animals, as we did.
