I was on a week-long business trip in Chengdu and wanted to go on an exciting excursion before returning to the U.S. After a quick research, I came across with the Giant Buddha in Leshan and thought this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-see. Originally, I was planning on doing this by myself, but I ran out of time to do all the necessary research for it (how to get there, etc.), so I decided to hire a guide. Based on excellent customer reviews on TripAdvisor, I decided to go with West China Go. The reservation process was quick & easy. My guide was Jamie who was a very friendly & knowledgeable young lady. She picked me up from my hotel promptly at 7:30 am and we walked to the nearby subway station, which was something I really wanted to do after riding a car for business for the entire week. Knowing that I was going to do this excursion myself originally, Jamie showed me how to buy tickets, where to transfer train, etc. On the high-speed train, we chatted about her past travel experiences and she seemed to be a very experienced traveler herself. After we arrived to Leshan, a car was waiting for us and after a short ride, we got to the gate of Giant Buddha. Jamie explained to me the historical significance of this place, and when we got to the top of stairs, OMG the Buddha was right there in front of me. truly breathtaking. Due to the time constraint and a huge crowd waiting to zigzag down to the Buddha's feet, we instead decided to take a boat tour after lunch, which was a smart move. That gave us an extra time to explore temples there. What a beautiful place! During our walk, Jamie was kind enough to answer many questions that I had about China, from the history of China to Eastern medicine vs. Western medicine, etc. For lunch, she took me to the restaurant that is popular among locals, instead of taking me to a restaurant for tourists. The fact that this restaurant has been in business for over 100 years (!), that tells me how popular this place is. All the food she ordered (especially mapo tofu) was delicious! After lunch, we went on a boat tour. Lucky for me, we could get on a newer boat which was very nice. She took me to the best spot on the boat to see the Buddha. The view of the Buddha from the boat was amazing! After getting off the boat, we had a little time for a walk in the city, which was another cultural learning opportunity for me. Originally, she was supposed to drop me off at my hotel at 5:30 pm, but when I mentioned that I really wanted to see Chengdu Opera, Jamie made a quick call and helped me get a first-class seat for the show which she described as one of the best she has seen. It was a moment of my dream come true! Since she had other commitment that evening, she took me to the theater to get my ticket, showed me how to ride subway back to my hotel and where to go while waiting for the show (I had 3 hours to kill). Per her recommendation, I explored Kuanzhai Xiangzi (Wide & Narrow Alley). A bunch of small shops, street foods and the crowd.... a truly Chinese experience! Jamie returned to meet me at the theater 10 minutes before the show to make sure I got to my seat (which can be a little tricky & confusing unless you're a local and speak Chinese). Needless to say, the show was spectacular! I'm so glad to have chosen the West China Go and was very lucky to have Jamie as my guide for the day. This one-day adventure was the highlight of my first trip to China and I would definitely recommend Jamie. I would request her again the next time I visit Chengdu. Thank you for the amazing day Jamie!
